I m in 3d animation & cad designing, & i can't buy a quadro FX it's too costly

right now i use a Pentium 4 3.06 GHz with 1 GB RAM, & FX5900XT, i do very little gaming, using an Intel 865GBF motherboard, so no overclocking

Since i have an AGP system, i can upgrade only to a Geforce 6600GT/6800GS/7800GS, now 7800GS is costly & i want to know weather Gefoce 6 series supports Opengl 2.0 or not, as on XFX website, in their geforce 6800GS page, it's written that it supports OpenGL 2.0, while there is no such info on nvidia site about series 6

Maybe you could softmod a 6800GT/6800nu (nv40) into its quadro counterpart. All 6/7 series support openGl 2.0

My old PNY 6800GT said it supported OpenGL 2.0 IIRC I thought the support for 2.0 was actually something driver based not hardware.

I just cheeked at the NVIDIA developer site, seems that geforce 6 & 7 series gfx cards both support OpenGL 2.0 completely in hardware, my FX 5900XT is also said to support OpenGL 2.0, but it doesn't have enough horsepower, so the support is slower then that in Geforce 6 & 7, but at least it will work

Also found that forceware 75 series or late has them enabled in the gfx card

so, I now come to the new question, since I don't play a lot of games, only a few, what should I plug in my system, considering overall power usage & heat etc, geforce 6600GT seems good, but kind of out dated, while 7800GS is costly

What about H.264 decoding, will that be a Geforce 7 exclusive feature or also supported completely in Geforce 6600GT

The press release from NVIDIA stated support for 6xxx series. I have yet to see a player though.
