Good Day,

I'm thinking of buying a GeForce2 video card, but I'm not sure of which one ... I would like to get some advice ... :)

My computer:
  • PIII Coppermine 600EB
  • Motherboard ASUS P3V4X
  • 128Mb SDRAM PC133
  • WD 20Gb 7200rpm
  • SB Live! Value
  • Windows98 (until I change it to Windows ME)
  • 19" Sony Trinitron Monitor (GS420 I guess ...)

Usage:
  • I use the computer for work (programming)
  • ... and to play some great games ... :) GP3, JA2, RA2, DK2, ... :)

Questions:
  1. I believe the order (from the least to the most powerfull) of the video cards are as follows: Geforce2GTS / Geforce2MX / Geforce2Pro / Geforce2Ultra. Am I right, or am I wrong?
  2. About the cards described above, which one should I choose from? Creative Labs Geforce2 Ultra 64Mb DDR? Another? Which one?
  3. Which types of memory (DDR,etc...) do the Geforce2 cards come bundled with? What are the diferences (basic ones)?
  4. I heard about the N20 chipset architecture ... it should be an advance over the cards I described in point 1. Are they based on the N19 chipset architecture?
  5. Where can I find any info about the upcoming architecture?

I would like to know your opinion/comments on the questions I wrote ... I know it's a lot of questions ... but I think you all can help.

Thanks in advance! ;)

1. GeForce2 MX comes before GeForce2 GTS; but the rest is correct.
2. Based on your system I would not get anything less than the GeForce2 GTS! I don't know if you really need the Ultra either. I would get a good GeForce2 GTS or a GeForce2 Pro. I would recommend the Hercules PRO or any of the higher end GTS cards with 64MB of DDR (Asus, Creative, etc.)
3. You want 64MB of DDR.
4. & 5. There will always be a better card coming out, but your system will be well suited by the cards I mentioned in #2.

Let us know what you decide.

I agree with cmaMath's advice. Go for a GTS Pro rather than an ultra (although prices on ultras have come down quite a bit), it also has 64mb of DDR ram clocked at 400MHz. With a little overclocking you can get into ultra territory. Most of the GeForce cards are the same, the Hercules is one of the better ones.

As far as NV20 goes all that is known is based or rumor and conjecture but reports say that in the right situation it could be 50% than the fastest NV15 Ultra! However, price will be high.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your advices! I'm now in the state of deciding which one to by from the Geforce2GTS / Geforce2Pro / (depending of $$$) Geforce2Ultra.

As soon as I choose it, I'll post it here!!!:)

Thanks!
