from this forums, good MXs are the following:
Herc's Prophet
Asus 7100

Bad MXs:
evga
Gainward Cardex
and to my intuition, Visiontek's and Elsa

CONCLUSION
it just doesn't matter...

wait a minute...

Anandtech reviewed the Asus and Visiontek
Visiontek has 7ns mem,
Asus has 6,

Visiontek is FASTER than Asus in stock.

both reviewed by the same person, benchmarked with the same rig and drivers.

so why there's such a big different in score, just because of more outouts? but do mark that its 80 bucks more. the more confusing is why 7ns can be faster than 6ns?

If you have 7ns memory running at 166 and 6ns memory running at 166 they should be the same speed. Perhaps the Visiontek has some other advantage?

The 7ns will already be "overclcoked" at 166 though, and the 6ns won't, so the 6 will have better overclocking potential.

Love all since they are fast and cheap. :) There are some better ones (such as Asus and the Herc) but they cost a little more. They are all GOOD for the buck.

The ones with slow memory suck(oem herc prophet), the ones with fast memory own(retail herc prophet) :D

Btw the elsa has 6ns memory right? I just bought one but i cant find any memory specs on it.

Too bad the 2d quality seems to stink on most MX boards, Radeon for me I guess.

more good mx cards:MSI and absolute mm (just a guess)

anyway for those who doesn't trust mx you could always buy the radeon 32 mb sdr- slightly more expensive than the mx. Performance is very similar to mx and I suppose the 2d is better?

There are no good or bad cards IMO. I have an EVGA card (which I have gotten up to 190/180) in one system, my friend has a Cardex one. Both are good (although many think otherwise) considering they are 45 bucks less than a retail Hercules card.

andylawcc: I have a evga geforce2 mx that I o/c to 201mhz and it's been a solid performer for only $115.00. I am using 6.26 nvidia drivers. The 6.27/6.31 did nothing for me.

I have the visiontek card and it oc's to 185/200 just fine. I think I paid $114 USD shipped to my door. Great card at a great price. Perfectly happy with this card.

i've heard the prophet 2 mx has the best 2d quality out of them, i'd get that probably worth the extra $20-30. The oem has 7ns ram the retail is 5.5ns, its about a $30 difference (120 vs 150) but the speed difference is probably not a big deal. The ram is rated at 7ns but that might be at a certain latency so they probably lower it to make it to 166mhz. Shouldn't be a huge difference might be worth you $30 to just get the cheaper card.
