I am looking at buying a new game for my system, which is as follows:

Athlon 64 3700+
1 GB RAM
Geforce 7800GT
Win XP

I don't even know if C&C 3 or Battlefield 2142 can run decently on my system because I've been out of gaming for a while. Are there any other good games out that can run well on my system?

I am looking for anything, be it RPG, multiplayer-shooter, RTS etc.

Thanks.

C&C 3 is my pick. My system is pretty current, but there are tons of reviews praising the game for it's ability to be played smooth and look good even on non-current hardware.

They should both work pretty well. They both run on older engines and neither one is particularly demanding, although it depends on what resolutions you intend to use.

Resident Evil 4 came out recently for PC. I hadn't played it before and it was great. Need a gamepad though.

Both ought to run alright. BF2142, well most fairly recent games, would do better with 1.5 or 2GB of RAM.

I used to have a A64 @ 2.5ghz, 2GB, 7800GT (now have the same but dual core @ 2.7ghz) and I play C&C3 @ 1680x1050 smoothly. I play BF2 @ 1680x1050, 4x AA, AF, mid and low details.

I used to play BF2 on 1GB and the same system, and it still ran fine. It was helpful to go to 1.5GB, but less so with 2GB, as I have very few processes running while gaming. So in your situation, whatever game you get, just make sure to close down any non-essential programs to reduce heavy paging.

I'm unsure on the RAM usage of C&C3, but BF2 (and likely BF2142) are known to play better with > 1 GB of RAM. Either ought to play good enough though.

For those who play BF2 or 2142 with 'only' 1 GB of system memory, it can make a nice improvement by simply going into your:

C:\Program Files\EA Games\'game name'\mods\'game name' folder

and then renaming the "Movies" folder "Movies1". That will cut the Movies from when the game starts (trust me, after seeing them about 3 times you can't wait to get past them anyways), the login screen, and the server selection screen. You can drag as many back and forth between the folders until you get the balance you like (I only keep the server selection movie in my Movie folder). I've been doing that since BF42.

EDIT: Ohhh yeah, BTW, since you asked: Get HL2. Not as good as the original (but still very good) and would run VERY good on your system. It looks GREAT, plays well, and still has a big following with the multiplayer/online game. Also, it has a ton of Mods available, so you are bound to find a game you like even if you don't like HL2 multiplayer.
