Step 1) Figure out what GAMES your son wants to play
Step 2) Buy the console that will play most if not all of THOSE GAMES

GameCube has a lot of fun games that a 10 year old will like. (Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario, Mario Party (4 - 6), Mario Tennis, etc.) And still he can evolve into harder games like Metroid Prime later.

Ditto all of this! Plus, the really hardcore games that have bad content (like GTA: San Andreas for PS2) can't be played on the GameCube. Personally, my favorite games for the GC are the Super Monkey Ball series. :p

Oh, one more thing. The GC is $50 cheaper...pocket the change or get another game or two for your boy. :)

PS2 has a pretty strong gamebase but it's for older gamers.

Edit: How did you manage to be registered here for 2 years and only get 4 posts?

I say Gamecube. I'm getting one (already have a PS2) mainly for the party games. I only use my PS2 for GT series and GTA series.

EDIT: I'm 22;)

XBOX
Why?
Mod it with a larger hdd
Stick all his games on it, store them, and they will never get scratched again. Think of the money you will save doing this and not seeing your hard earned money on that $50 disk get ruined. Lets face it hes 10 years old like my son and as much as you yell at him for leaving his disks out, take them away, or what ever they will still get ruined by a 10 year old.
Granted you will never be able to go on live BUT look at the other advantages:

You can record all of your sons shows and stick them on a dvd as a video cd and play them on his xbox. Hell you can stick that on his hdd as well if you wanted. In video cd format you can put alot of your sons kids shows on 1 dvd and he wll be able to watch it all day long with out havingto swap it out.

If all the games are on the hdd and you by one with a thompson drive and it goes out you will still be able to play your games because they are on the hdd and if you ftp the xbox you really wont ever need the drive again.

DVD playback with out having to buy the add on stuff so less stuff to break or loose.

You can place your sons entire cd collection onto his hdd and play it right off it with the built in media player (same as what you have on your computer)

And lets face it the graphics are just so much better then the playstaion so you will want to play it as well.

The only thing the playstaion has going for it is that games are a plenty and in some cases cheaper but could never do what you can do with a modded xbox.

Again this is my opinion and plan on doing it for my son when I have the funds because I am sick of throwing away computer pc games.

Hope this helped :)

He's 10, he won't much care either way. Get the ps2 so you can play GTA: SA ~9 months before its PC release (btw EFF Rockstar for that :|)

Please don't let your 10yr old child anywhere near anything as violent as GTA. If you want to get it for yourself, lock it away in the gun safe when you're not using it.

What's wrong with 10 year olds playing gta? Even Half-life has more blood/guns/bad guys than gta.

Why are you running away? I think the general consensus in the thread is for him to get a GC.

Oh nothing. I would love my son learn that its cool to steal cars, pick up hookers and then ask why when he goes behind a building the car rocks from side to side, to kill people, yeah that stuff is great for a 10 year old mind that is figuring out how the world works :p

I dont know how you were brought up but I make sure my son doesnt see or hear anything like that till hes much older.

OH lets not forget getting paid by people for drugs and commiting crimes. Ever 10 year old or younger for that fact needs to play games like that. See how messed up they become.
