Just what the title says! Which game do you think it most technologically advanced?

Far Cry

or Doom 3

I've not played doom3 - nobody here has played a release version of it, so how the heck would I know?

Oh it's gone gold...? Hmm, I bet it doesn't have big outdoor environments like far cry, and that was the best part of FC :D

Since I have not played Doom 3...its pretty impossible to tell.

Hedging on the fact that I think Carmack is one slick programmer...I'll go with Doom 3...but I might as well be telling you I know how nuclear fusion can be obtained...cause I really don't know.

One thing to note...it appears that the engines were built with two different goals in mind. Far Cry was built to display enormous outdoor scenes decently while Doom 3 is being built to do some really spooky indoor scenes (at least from what I have seen screenshot wise).

Well, I would love to answer this question, but D3 isnt even out yet. No one has even played the game, dude. I mean, from all the technical jargon that Carmack and Co. and spewn forth we can only guess that D3 will be more advanced.

Yea -it takes place in Chernobyl. That a pretty good setting for a FPS I think. Its said that there will be some RPG elements in the game (which should bring some new things to the table) and a much touted "weather system". But I've watched several of the videos and it looks fun, but as far as anticipation goes....it ranks behind HL2 and D3 for sure. But then again, what game doesnt, right? :)

The Far Cry engine is newer than the one that Doom 3 is going to use.

I played the Doom 3 Alpha in 2002 and I can tell you that it will be scary to play late at night by yourself. The sounds and atmosphere created are great.

Dude, the Far Cry engine was originally a techdemo for the GeForce 2.

And the doom 3 alpha build was a last minute rush job for E3. With lots of filler textures and missing shaders.

Hmmm, what is newer: Quake 3's engine or Crytek's?

So the general opinion thinks Doom 3 is more advanced, awesome. But I dont think the Cryengine is bad at all, just Doom 3 is better. Half Life 2 and Far Cry may be tied though.

Far Cry impressed me, I didn't think it would be as advanced as it is but I still have to say D3 will probably be the victor. The lighting on Far Cry is certainly the best we have seen on any game to date but I think D3 will be even better from the pictures and video I have seen. This is interesting though because I am not sure if the D3 engine is as efficient at randering high dynamic range scenes (outdoors). Farcry does a good job there but the artists of Far Cry used a lot of trickery to make it look better than the engine was capible of creating. Also, most games have a really neat texture algorithm which makes them look good even at close distances and I'd be very very surprised if D3 didn't. All I can say is Far Cry doesn't have it. I am giving D3 the benifit of the doubt because it looks about equal but Carmack has never disapointed.

Seems whenever we see games with big worlds, they are hyped before they come out. Whether of not they deserve it is a different quesiton. I agree that Stalker is so far overrated from what we know of it.

You can judge from the e3 2003 trailer, not fully but it gives a good idea of how the game looks graphically.
