Which for best performance when o/c'ed? XP 1600/1800 or P4 1.8A? Help!

Hi,

I need some advice please people 🙂

I have a limited budget to spend. I cannot decide between getting an Athlon XP 1600/1800 and o/c that as much as possible WITHOUT unlocking it (i really can't be arsed) OR do I get a P4 1.8A and o/c that? I will be using fans (not water or anything like that) and hopefully quiet ones at that.

Please bare in mind that the next time I upgrade, it will most likely be 1-2 years from now at a minimum.

Is it worth waiting for the KT400 boards if I do get an Athlon? Any real advantage over the KT333?

I will most likely get the Asus A7V8X if I decide to get the Athlon and the Asus P4S8X for the P4.

What is better for o/cing regarding the Athlons? The XP1600 or the XP1800? What's a realistic o/c for these chips remembering I won't be unlocking them and I will be using fans.

I know this is a lot of questions but I would REALLY appreciate some advice and help, I am stuck on what is the best solution! 😕

Basically, what's gonna give me the more performance once it's overclocked?

P.S. I have just got some Samsung Original PC2700 so that's what RAM I will be using.

Thank you!

I got my last 1.8a up to 2.61ghz with 387mhz ddr ....At that score it would have done better then the 2.533ghz p4 in last anandtech review that virtually ran a dead heat with the new 2600+ xp....Neither one of those chips will reasonably hit those speeds let alone the amd boards lack agp/pci locks so high fsb's can be an issue...

KT400 likely will not be a big noticeable difference versus kt333...The athlon unless it is jacked up to 166fsb will max out memory bandwidth still at pc2700 levels or 333mhz ddr....
Can you say MARKETING SCAM....

See what the 2400 and 2600 debut at in price though they will both be more then the 1.8a and they are rumored to not oc very far. Barton with 333mhz fsb and possibly 512kb l2 may look nicer but it is pure speculation on many of its features.

Get the P4 in this case...ocing I say P4 northwoods...Not ocing AMD still has the market at the lower end chips...Now the new 2600+ will likelyu be very close to p4 2.533ghz price when it arrives and so intel finally becomes a good value. It also still ocs very well...possibly the 3ghz level!!!

Damn AMD and its low priced cpu's.... lol
I built a cheap 1.8A system a few weeks ago runs @ 2.2 like a champ.
At the same time I built a AMD 2100+ system.... Ive put max cooling in both
Alpha HS on the P4, Thermalright AX-7 on the AMD 80mm fans on both.

In a few tests the AMD walks all over my Intel but so far I love that 1.8A.

If your bugging over the price of stuff go AMD. If you want a max OC'ing rig go
intel 1.8A (my opinion based on the AMD cpus your asking about)...

I've yet to try the KT333 style mobos yet so I got no answer for you on that!

i've sold my intel 1.6 cpu and mobo and got a amd mobo and cpu coz i needed some money, got a 1600+ with fsb set to 166 making it a 2100+. I love it so far, it seems better than the 1.6 oced to 2.4. But i dunno if it's my mobo or not, it wouldnt' cold boot, always need to hit reset then it boots up.. (when oced)

If I can get a 1600+ that overclocks to 2100+, then I will be very happy 🙂

If it beats a P4 @ 2.4GHz at that speed, I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me what a 1600+ o/c'ed to XP2100+ levels beats in terms of Pentium 4 CPUs? i.e. does it beat a P4 2.26 or can it beat a P4 2.4?

Also, remember that I won't be unlocking the Athlon...

Cheers for the advice....

It likley would beat a 2.26ghz p4b but not the 2.4ghz...Look at the reviews and you will see the 2200+ doesn't beat the 2.4ghz p4 and the new pr rating revised 2400+ does just beat it.

If you get the 1600+ xp I tell you to do the research and get the right mobo. Without a mobo with the right pci dividers you could drastically hit the wall in terms of ocing thanks t the pci bus getting too high. AMD mobos don't seem to have boards to lock the agp/pci bus. Quite a few intel chipset boards do though...

If you got a 1.8a you should be able to get it to 2.4ghz which would be 533fsb and 354mhz ddr. At 2100+ you wont beat it...

If you got a 1.6 and got it to 2.4ghz that would 150fsb for a 600mhz fsb (quad pumped) and 400mhz ddr and it would be better then the 1.8a at the same speed and now the 2100+ falls further behind...

wont be unlocking chip??? 10.5 x 166 = 1743 or around a 2100+....you better hope you get to 166 on some of those boards or you will be forced to unlock.

Amd 1600 AGOIA greenie.....

(Forest Gump) Well thats all I have to say about that!!!

Just get a good board with a kt333 chipset and a good fan and heatsink and you will pawn alot of rigs. I had a p4 1.6a and was not impressed. I changed to a xp 1600 agoia greenie and the epox 8k3a+ and it rocks. I love it. For fast performance... go amd. They are totally right about the megahertz myth. My 2 cent take it or leave it...... hehe
