Do you think it was the Jacksonian Era or the Gilded Age?

I'd have to say the Jacksonian Era (Jackson's presidency until Lincoln, the latter who crushed democracy by starting an extreme counter-revolution) despite its strong protections for slavery and despite the Mexican American War.

The Gilded Age wasn't as free (in my opinion) mainly because of the high tariffs, the 14th Amendment which made everyone subjects (rather than Citizens), racist restrictions on immigration, subsidies for big businesses, and the land grants. Also, Federal bankruptcy legislation was re-established in 1878... it had been left up to the States since Jefferson signed the repeal of the Federalists' pro-debtor legislation).

I've precisely pinpointed the eras under the current Constitution as follows:
Old Republic (Jefferson was the "classical liberal Statesman of the Old Republic")
Good Feelings
Jacksonian Democracy
Counter-Revolution to Preserve Govt Revenue/Deconstruction
Gilded Age
Progressive/the Great War
Roaring 20s.
Great Depression
The New World Order Era ("WWII" to the present).

Of those 9 eras, only two could be considered anywhere close to free and those two were the Gilded Age and the Era of Jacksonian Democracy. The two least free eras are the Counter Revolution/Deconstruction and the NWO Era.

Because it was intended by its framers (like Sherman) to consolidate the States into one big Union that could more easily go on militaristic adventures. See Dr. Thomas J DiLorenzo on that one.

It also devalued Citizenship not only by make the "C" lower case, but also by making it jus soli, rather than jus sanguin... it made everyone subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S Govt.

I think the Jacksonian Era (which is really a poor way to describe that time period) was the most free as well. White men were free to beat their wives, massacre and displace natives, and own other human beings. RAWR freedom.

The least free is our current times mainly because I have to pay taxes and I cannot own my own ICBM. The government is too centralized, I would really prefer is to go back to tribal and kin based 'confederacies' from pre-modern times because being terrorized by my neighbors is much better than having tariffs.
