I've heard good things about Toshiba, but what is the best out there? I've heard that IDE DVD's actually perform better than SCSI. Is this true?

Don't know about IDE vs. SCSI, but I have had two toshiba drives, the SD-1202 and the SD-1212, and they have worked perfectly for 2 and 1.5 years, respectively. I would definitely buy from toshiba again.

Another vote for Toshiba's. #1 for ripping and they are the quietest out there.
I've had my 5x/32x Toshiba for almost 3 years w/ out problems. Whenever I upgrade it will be to a 12x/40x Toshiba, or faster if they have it.

My favorite DVD is the Pioneer 16X Slot loading - very quite and the slot loading feature is just so awesome :)

I have played about 5 movies and the Sopranos Season 1 on it - Never a problem.

Also I have one in my 2nd computer if you look below.
