Which DVD drive to get?

I had the Pioneer 104S and then the 106S. Both drives lasted me only 3 years collectively. My 106S just died. I always thought the Pioneer's were the best, but I would think thet should last a little longer. So, which one to go with? Lite-On, Toshiba, Pioneer, Others?

Not too concerned about rip speed, as my burner does that quite well. I just want it to play DVD's and read failry fast.

Thanks,

LJ

The Lite-on at Newegg is only $48 shipped and the Pioneer 106S is $56 shipped, so not much difference. I kind of got used to the slot load, but I am kind of down on the life of the Pioneer drive. I currently have my Pioneer slaved to my burner and all used to work great before it died. Does anyone know if the Lite-on works well as the slave? This is my preffered configuration.

Hello,

I have the Lite-On LTD163 DVD-ROM 16x and think it's awesome. Was going to got with Pioneer or Toshiba, but went with the Lite-On and used the saved money for a faster burner (Also a Lite-On, the LTR2410B CD-R/RW 24x10x40). Got them both from newegg, and you can get Lite-On drives in black!!

Having read around, seems like Lite-On is really becoming more and more respected...considering the speed, reliability and media-handling you get versus the price you pay.

Another vote for Lite-On. Have the LTD-163 in my system along with the LTR-40125S burner.

I have a Pioneer tray loading DVD-116 and an ASUS tray loading DVD-E616, and both work great. The ASUS however is region locked and so far there hasn't been any firmware or hacks around it. The Pioneer has firmware to enables it to be region-free, and also a "quiet" mode for people concerned with sound. The ASUS is, however, newer, supports the ATA100 interface and is generally faster.

Slot load is simply the better design (no waiting for the tray, and no way to accidentally damage it), but the longevity of some of the Pioneer drives leaves a lot to be desired. Another vote for the Liteon LTD163 here (which, incidentally....can do DAE blisteringly fast and is a great CloneCD reader).

Slot load doesn't allow the use of small sized discs. This is an irritant to me since I actually own a few of these.

Never thought of that...

I'll check it out, but I already ordered the Lite-on.

The more I think about it, I have to wonder if the slot load makes the drive die faster.

If you are primarily concerned with compatibility and reliability, and NOT ripping speed (music or DVD), your best choice is certainly Toshiba. Toshiba is better than Pioneer and Lite-on in those respects but is much slower in rip speed. Music rips (DAE) are a slow 11x and DVD rips are very slow at 2x. That's the only knock on Toshiba drives. Oh, they are the quietest of the three brands too.

Thanks. I always heard good things about Toshiba DVD drives, specifically their compatability with CloneCD and make perfect "back-ups" of copy protected games.

I really don't need this, but am curious, is the Lite-on I just ordered fully compatable with CloneCD?

I use my Lite On burner for both reading and writing with Clone CD and it works fantastic. I would think that the the Lite On DVD drive would be compatable with Clone CD as well.

;)

I'm going to go a little off the mainsteam here; but if viewing DVD's is your main concern then I have to recommend the Creative DVD (I have the Encore 2X w/decoder. that I don't use anymore since I upped the CPU from a P-II333 to a P-41.7, but if you don't have the CPU power. the add in card is great). Anyway. back to the point. I've been using this Creative drive for about 3 years now, with no problem. So, if you can find one it will probably be real inexpensive, and reliable.

Chain777 - thanks for the input, but unfortunately, I am pretty down on Creative these days. Long story involving crappy drivers and lack of updates. I am sure you have heard it.

I wouldn't use a Creative product if it were given to me for free.
