Which DVD Burner To Get ??

Hi Everyone
Decided to get a dvd burner . Cann't decide in between these two models Plextor PX-708A and Sony DRU510A . I read the review of plextor here and it was good except the buffer which is 2MB vs Sony has 8MB. My question is :-

a) I will be using this to back up my data and burning home movies.
b)I assume have a big buffer will make a big difference when such a large amounts of data is copied. As there will be less chances of making a bad disc.
c) Should I wait for prices to drop more for 4X or wait for 8X, will it be a lots of difference in between them.
Thanks

Having just 2MB doesn't make any difference. It should right when burning dvd movies. Both Sony and Plextor have good reviews though.

The buffer is irrelevant for any drive that has Burn-Proof or some comparable technology. The larger, 8MB buffer is a sales tool. <sample marketing quote>"Let's give this model 8MB cache, and this one 2MB. Then, we can charge xx dollars more for it!!"</sample marketing quote> Personally, I'd get whichever one is least expensive. Both those drives have gotten excellent reviews.

I bought one of the cheap ones AOpen the burner crapped out after 6 months. I read the review just wondering if anyone heard/experienced bad things about them ?

What they said about cache is correct. It might save 0.87 seconds on a burn to have the larger cache...effectively no difference any longer.

Plextor has the better track record. All other things being equal it's the choice.

I have the sony 510a external fw/usb2 and plextor pf 504 internal but I converted into a external fw drive.

Even using both as external drive, I never had any buffer problem !

& I like the plextor better.. the sony has already been rma once for repair in 2 month of usage. About 1-2 dvd burn a week.

I would recommend the plextor, love my 504 which isn't as good as the 708.
