Which DVD Burner should I get?

are you in desperate need of a dvd burner cause imo i would rather wait for a better writer cause their is no point for dvd writers right now unless you have a ton of crap to burn off the computer

What do you meen by better? Are new and improved ones coming out soon? If so, what and when?

If you want the latest and greatest, pick the Plextor, although the Sony is a good 4x unit. If you want to wait a bit, Pioneer and Sony (I think), according to Anandtech, will be releasing their 8x DVD burners in a couple of months at a lower price point than the Plextor.

well if you hold off, it will be just like how cdrws are, remember when everyone was like this is a big hype when 8x jumped to 12x, then pretty soon 16x came and the 24x and then 48x, if you aren't in desperate need i say hold off for a couple months see what the computer industery release cause garunteed, if you buy the plextor now, in one year it will easily be outdated

I agree but, no matter when I buy it, there's always going to be something better around the corner. I don't need it now, but I will within a month or two so I can tranfer my digital camcorder movies to DVD.

Remember that it still takes 15 minutes to burn a dvd on a 4x burner... but I would say that the pioneer a06 is a good one, I have the a05, and I am quite pleased with it. Or if you really want to play the waiting game then get a cheaper one and use it for a few months till an 8x burner comes out, and sell the other one on ebay.

The The Plexter PX-708A is 8x, but I think I'll wait for an 8x external. Are there any nice ones coming in the next couple months?

If you want a DVD burner now, get the Plextor. It is the best burner out right now, hands down. And I don't think ~$250 for a DVD burner is too much to pay. Sure they will come down in price, but so does everything else. Are you going to wait forever, because there will always be something better around the corner.

Should I use a separate cd burner or will the Plextor DVD burner work just as well? It's 40x CD-R, my current CD burner is 48x CD-R, so I shouldn't notice too much of a differance in speed, but what about wear & tear?

Also, the Sony has an 8 MB buffer and the Plexter only has a 2 MB. Will that make a huge differance in burning speed and, or quality?

I think there's a real reason to wait too - the argument that there is always new stuff coming out and you can't keep waiting forever, is almost always true, but in this case there is so much coming out and prices are dropping so fast as volume goes up that it could really make a big difference to hold off a couple more months. I'm waiting for the sony 510 to go below 200.

I want the sony based on 2 things: I tried one and it was able to read 5 bad CDs that my own cd burner (that made them) couldn't read, and I heard the Plextor CD burners are picky readers (but great writers), so I assume the DVD burners might also be picky. I have a lot of crappy CDs I want to put on DVD.

I agree, there isn't really much reason to wait. Especially when your dealing with DVD burners, sure companies are releasing 8x burners.. but that is damn fast, your talking over 4gigs in around 10 minutes.. that is quite fast.. remember not to compare the speeds with CDR's. They are not going to be jumping from 8x to 12x, 16x etc.. anytime soon... I don't think the media will handle it.. maybe with newer technology, but that will probably take some time and come at a very high price.

If you are fine with around 15 minutes for a full 4.7gb dvd then I would suggest you pick up a cheaper 4x burner.. there is no need to pay a bunch of money for the new 8x's if you do not need the speed
