I've got the NEC-3500A and it's very quiet, also very good. The NEC-3520A is said to follow suit.

the 3520A burns cd faster and now supports dvd-r DL with the 3.07FW. so they are pretty much identical, except the pioneer's warranty is provided by pioneer but the NEC via newegg i think. also when you buy refurb you risk something not working and you'd lose some warranty as well.

I'd go with the NEC ND-3520A and I'd buy a new one if you're willing to invest anything upto $55.

Yep, and the 3540 is out if you feel like pushing that to 59.

The http://www.Geeks.com has been selling the Philips-based Benq 1620 (seems to be highly regarded on CDFreaks.com) for $39.99 on their frequent sales. (I just looked and Newegg's price is lower than the Geek's shipping included) Revised: the one the Geek's have been running sales on is the Retail kit - definitely cheaper than Newegg (but not if you do apples-to-apples shipping - only if you ship ground). I haven't seen their Sizzling Sunday sale (usually runs from late Sun. eve thru early Mon. morning Eastern time) yet today - keep your eyes peeled.
. But between the two you listed I'd pick the Pioneer. The Sony's are basically LiteOns and the LiteOn DVD burners aren't maintaining the high regard earned by their CD burners.

It's not pioneer or sony or nec, and it's not refurb, but I got my DVD +/- RW drive from newegg for only $109. It's a LaCie 16x/4x/16x w/ lightscribe (crap load of full version burning software. VERY awesome).
