Hello. I would like to buy a duron and o/c it. I am shooting for 1ghz. Which is the best Duron for O/c? 650mhz, 700mhz or ?

Could you please direct me to a site which has good sales practices, decent prices and sells unlocked Durons?

I also need some help about the Mobo. I was thinking about Abit kt7. I see some people recommend MSI also. Is it good for O/C?

Thank you for all the info!

I run my Duron600 at 928MHz at default core voltage of 1.6v and around 40C cooled with a ChromeOrb.
It does 1GHz at 1.75v.
I have not pushed it beyoand 1GHz yet becasue of the heatsink I have; the chpip starts getting "warm" at 1.75v...
I'm running in on an Abit KT7 and did the unlocking myself with a conductive pen.
Got to www.ibuyer.net for prices.

thank you for the info.

If i buy higher speed CPU - let say 700 does it mean i have a higher change of o/c to 1000 mhs?

Higher speed to start off almost always means a better chance at that higher speed. However, that does not mean that this chance is subtantially larger.

For the Duron chips, the factor that seems to be most important is the weel number of the chip. Early chips do relatively poorly whereas the newer chips get an extra 100+MHz advantage.

About the boards, the MSI K7T Pro2 is the one that is good for OCing. The Asus A7V and Abit KT7 are good too. Just keep in mind that if you go for the MSI, the Pro does not OC while the Pro2 does.

Frankly, I don't know... I don't know if just got lucky or if most 600s o/c to 1GHz+. Though I have read accounts, by ppl who certainly know what they are doing, having a hard time pushing their higher then mine rated parts to even 900MHz, never mind 1GHz.

My personal philosophy when I was deciding on which Duron to get was this: get the cheapest part I can get my hands on. This way any extra MHz you can get out of the CPU will be all the sweeter ;-) Also, in case of Durons it appears that the lower the rated speed, the better the value.
I din't care weather or not I'd get to 1GHz. Sure, it would be nice, but I was prepared to be happy with 800MHz. And what a pleasant surprise did I get!

A good source for Durons is TCWO. It comes up regularly with good comments in posts. Not the least expensive but do sell guaranteed overclocked Durons if you want to go to that extra cost.

Ixbt-Labs has been running a chart on good overclocking weeks for the Duron and the top weeks right now are:
Duron 600 AKBA0036APAW 1000-1050
Duron 650 AKB0031UPCW 1050-1100
Notice that it is not just the week but the whole code for these.
They feel that
ANY week 36 or later has a good chance of reaching 1000.
The only problem is finding a site that will ensure you get that specific cpu.:frown:

Another good source is Bunta.com. They have good prices. Bought the Epox EP-8KTA+ for $114.83 shipped. Now my retail 600 duron w/ stock HSF is at 900 Mhz, stable at 1.70vdc Vcore, 3.35vdc Vi/o and 37 degC.

Sorry, I seem to have left a letter out of the Duron 650, should read:
AKBA0031UPCW.

Also, if you want to see the whole list, go to Ixbt-Labs and scroll down the page to the chart in the Oct 31 postings.
Apparently the Duron 750 is not as a good an overclocker for some reason.

If you want 1ghz the safest bet is getting the 800. I heard they are not producing the newer differently so they can add more cache in the future. If you want to go with a cheaper duron then the 650 would be the best bet.

Thank you for all your replies.

I have a couple more questions.

1. Should I buy a OEM or REtail?
Is is true that the OEM is less overclockable ?

Also what fan sould i buy ? I am going with Abit and i know that only some of the fans can fit there. I am thinking about a chrome orb ?
Which one should i buy ?

Thank you again!

OEM is the same if you buy it from the right place... sometimes OEM can mean that it was pretested and overclocked poorly though, so make sure you buy it from a place that doesn't overclock... try www.lynncomp.com. I ordered my 650 MHz duron from there for cheap... I forget how much... but I have it up to 927 MHz now... and go with the Asus A7V, I think it's your best bet!! Just my opinion!!

the best bang for the buck by far is the Duron 600 or 650. Most will do 900 without much effort. my 650 has run a couple of days now at 1100. It is an OEM too. I think the best bang for the buck in hsf is the TaiSol which can be had for less than 20 bucks and will perform almost as good or better than the more expensive ones. My 650 would do 950 until I got the Taisol hsf. Now stable at 1100, not too bad for a $60 cpu.

Thanks. From where can I get the Taisol Heatsink ?

I was thinking to get Asus mobo, 700mhz duron and a Chrome Orb from bunta.
I think that i would be able to hit at least 900 with this config.

Kido, I've got a very very slightly used taisol for sale (used just today for a couple hours, a little scratched up), I know this isn't the for sale trade forum; but you don't have a profile or private messages enabled, but email me at shaft@planetquake.com and we will work something out.

My personal experience:

D600 --> 900MHz
D700 --> 1083MHz

I used the "pencil trick" on both with an Abit KT7 mobo (non-RAID) and a Cooler Master DP5-6H11 Heatsink/Fan.

I've even seen cases of Duron 600's getting 1300. That's not bad. When buying a Duron, it's up to the luck of the draw. You may get a great overclocking chip, you may get a poor chip. It has very little to do with the default core. I reccomend the MSI K7T pro2.

the ABIT KT7 is an all around very flexible board. and the asus av7 is also a comparable board, although these two boards are a bit more costy than the rest. if you're willing to dish out the extra dough then these two are a good choice.
