Which dog to get?

Planning to get a puppy I live in a fairly large house with my parents but I will be leaving home in a while and the dog will be kept by my parents so want a dog which is protective-that's not the only objective but an important one. I have been seeing pictures of Akitas and reading about their behavior and like whatever i have read about them so far.

Has anyone here owned both Akitas and German Shepherd? which do you prefer and why?

Thanks in advance 🙂

my aunt has two akitas and they are great. They are always protective, but seem to listen to her so they dont bite people when they visit. One thing is that they go crazy at the sound of a doorbell... even if its just a comercial on the tv/radio. Seem like greats dogs overall.

Here's my GSD and his adopted bro, a lab-husky mix.

The mutt was a youngster in that pic...he's now about 115 lbs! The GSD is low 90's.
Akita's are great dogs, but can be very aggressive towards other animals. GSD's are the perfect mix of aggression and wimpiness IMO. Ours is a big baby, but he scares the crap outta people when they show up at the house. Consider a mixed breed...
You'd save a lot of $$$, and could end up with something real nice. An Akita/GSD mix would be nice....

German Shepherd. Great personalities, wonderful dogs, less aggressive than Akitas but equally protective. Only problem is the propensity for hip displasia (sp?)

siberian husky

I've got a pomeranian. cool dogs if you don't have a huge yard. low poop output.

German shepard.

i have a German Shepard Beagle. well behaved. its getting old now though about 15. so its going. but well trained, not mean in anyway. but it has the nose of a beagle.

I haven't had good experiences with either Shepherds or Akitas. The few I've been around have had their share of problems (mostly behavioral, so it could just be a matter of not getting proper training). Really wanted a Husky or Malamute, but found that the temperament of a Pyr suited me best.

My sister has a shepherd..he's incredibly intelligent, but also stupid..keeps running in front of my car when I pull in the driveway, but he'll go find whatever ball of his that you tell him to..

If it's your first dog, I don't think an Akita is a good pick. A poorly trained Akita can be a very hard to control and very dangerous animal.

Just my $.02

Shepards are FANTASTIC dogs, but they require soooo much special care in their first few years to ensure that they grow in a manner which will prevent hip problems.

akitas are very obedient; all the ones i've known have never bitten, but i have been barked at/almost bitten by a german shephard

What would you suggest then?
