Which do you prefer, USED or REFURBISHED?

If you had a choice....?

I always tend to lean towards used, something about having a product that broke once gives me the willies...

I prefer "used". To me that says it still works fine. "Refurbed" tells me it was broken once and may do it again.

"Refurbished" does not necessarily mean it was broken. "Reconditioned" means that.

The once way-too-often-used term "newsed" would work well here. But if i HAD to stick to the options, probably used.

Unless, of course, it's chewing gum...

I'd rather buy used stuff than refurb. Refurb to me screams "Hey, I broke before and they 'fixed' me, but I'll break again on your arse"

Yup. For example, any Joe Schmoe can buy an item from Wal-Mart and return it later. Wal-Mart sends it back to the company regardless of whether or not the guy says it works. The item could literally be practically brand new.

But uhh the question is kind of flawed because it doesn't say what we're "buying" here. I'd be pretty specific.

used = who knows what condition its in

refurbished = fully tested to work just fine

People just don't know the actual definition of refurbish: "To make clean, bright, or fresh again; renovate." Which could simply mean they buffed the fingerprints off of a product someone returned because it didn't match their coffee mug. Even if the product was broken, a "refurbished" one would be fixed and tested to work and is usually guaranteed to work or else. "Used"...not so much.
