Which do you prefer, Ghost or DriveImage?

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I am a recent convert. I recently converted when I switched from DriveImage 2002 to Ghost 2003. I switched because Ghost 2003 came with Norton Systemworks 2003 Pro. I just want to see what the general consensus of AT is with this topic. I think Ghost is a cleaner product now, and it seems to work more efficiently with my system. The reason I did not use previous versions of Ghost Personal is because they did not have full NTFS support (only used to have Read, not write). So, whats the opinion of AT?

Not yet. I never said DI 2002 wasn't nice. It was the best program I ever used until I started playing with the newest Ghost. DI never failed me, but this new Ghost seems to have some options I may use in the future. Plus, Ghost seems to image (and restore) my drive a little faster that DriveImage.

Peronally i use ghost, partly becasue 1 it came with my norton system works. I have tried drive image but it was an older version. ghost does every thing i need it for anyway

Never used Drive Image so I voted for Ghost. Been using it for years. I hear good things about Acronis... namely that it can do backups while in Windows... and on a schedule, at that. Gotta get a hold of it to play.

We used Ghost at work for the past few years. Just last year Headquarters mandated that we switch to DI. We tried it out, and we're now using Ghost. 🙂 It's such a great product and never whines about partition errors(that don't exist) that DI tends to, for no reason.

I use ghost on all my stuff... fits on one disk, easy to use.. you can even use over the network..

I'm sure the others can do that, but norton is the best 🙂

Acronis true image

Has anybody else used Acronis True Image? I'm ready to buy and was considering getting Acronis True Image.

TryBeforeYouBuy 😉

Thanks for the link, it's a good idea, and I will definitely download and try before I buy. I was just hoping for some feedback from somebody that has used True Image as well as Ghost, and Drive Image.

I used ghost back when it was at version 4 but haven't used anything since then. I'm probably going to buy one of these myself, and saw something interesting. Ghost 2003 has the ability to write to firewire devices. I have a Firewire capable Mini-DV cam. Could I back up my laptop (which has a firewire connector) to a minidv camcorder? I wonder what kind of error correction it has. Anyone ever try this?

I use DI 7. It now works in Windows so it dosen't have to reboot to make an image of the primary partition. It's much quicker than the 2002 version too. I love it.

I just got DI 7 and it it screwed me up royally. It requires that you install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 - and that shot down my autologon in XP Pro. I refuse to deal with logons and passwords - so I dumped .NET and DI7. I ghave it away to a friend and went back to solid, reliable Drive Copy 4.0 on a bootable CDR I made. I don't do images - but drive-to-drive copies - several every week.

That is just the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long while.

Well, to each his own.

I agree with CorkyG. There's no reason to have to install all this crap on your HDD just to image a drive. I got DI7 and installed it and when I found that it did nothing that DI5 can't already do (and is a 65MB install!!!I:Q) I uninstalled it and took it back. Can you say "bloatware"?

DI5 works fine, it even images SATA drives. What more do you need from a drive imaging utility?

Check this out. See section 3 and 4.

RalfHutter..Did you return it to the place that you bought it and get a refund? I am seriously contemplating doing the same as this program and the realated .NET sh!t sucks, But don't know if CompUSSR will balk at me.

I got mine at Frys and when I took it back I told them that I wasn't going to install a program that forced me to install 50MB worth of ".net" crap just to image my drive. They took it back without any grief.

You may have more trouble with Compusa but be persistant, go to a manager if you have to. Look on the box, maybe Powerquest has some sort of "satisfaction guarantee"on the box or manual. I've used that in the past to return crappy software to Compusa. If push really comes to shove and they won't take it back, call Powerquest and explain your dissatisfaction with DI7 and ask for a refund. If enough people complain about this Bloatware maybe they'll rethink their strategy.
