which digital camcorder to get?

Canon and Sony are close in my book for camcorders. I would go with a Sony for the lower end but definitely a Canon once you start in on the multi-ccds. Canon lenses are unmatched IMHO. Course, this coming from me who has an old Sony Handycam Pro 3ccd Hi-8🙂

thanks. i was looking into tho sony because it has mpeg movie instead of the canon motion jpeg. any more? thanks.

also, since they are both excellent cameras, check out and see what the accessories cost. the batteries that come with the camera suck and you will want to get another. i got a sony pc5, and to get the big battery cost me $150. ouch..

Consumer Reports just comapred camcorders, the biggest difference I saw was that the Sony's had 1/2 of the repair & serious problems that Canon & JVC did-4% versus 8 & 9% respectively.

well i'm going to get the canon but is confused on which fire wire cable to get. there is a 4 to 4 pin and a 4 to 6 pin. i have a sound balster audigy so it has the fire wire on it but need to know which one will work on it. and for memory card. which one is the best to get or will any will do?

You need the 4-to-6 pin. The Firewire port on the video camera is a miniDV (four pin) and the connection to your audigy is a six pin.

My Dad has the Canon ZR45(MC?) and it is excellent for video and audio, but the still picture quality is pretty poor. (However, I'm not sure if he has learned to use the multimedia card for stills yet, or if he is just using tape.)

Nice camera!
