Which digi-cam do you have/want?

Just curious. I just went out and got myself a Canon S230, and I must say the pics are beautiful and the 3 minute video is very nifty as well. I was going to get the S30, but I figured I have an actual (Canon) SLR for that more advanced features if that's what I wanna do. Instead I went for uber-mobility. :)

I picked up a Canon PowerShot A40 last summer, and I love it. The picture quality is great, and it doesn't chew through batteries. I got it for under $300, which was a good deal for a 2 megapixel camera at the time, it seemed. 1600x1200 resolution is all I really need for my purposes.

Worth a look for anyone who's interested. I did my research and this was one of the top 2 MP cameras when I got it.

CanonA40

Gonna wait another year, i need a camera with a little more options to it. Ideally i'd want to switch from manual and auto focus and shoot in either apeture or shutter priority. Those are my only 2 requirements thus far. Still gotta make good use of this canon, so it wont be for awhile.

I just bought an S230 to upgrade my S110. I love both of them, but the long videos on the S230 will keep my wife from making me carry our camcorder all over the place so the upgrade was more than worth it. Now I've got a slightly used S110 that I've got to sell though.

I have a Nikon 885. Won't get another digi-cam until they come out with something thinner than the Canon digital Elphs with 3x optical and at least 3.3mps. My Nikon has started to sound funny lately though, so I may be taking it into BB for a free upgrade to the 4300 (I got the 4 year service plan.)

Minolta Dimage F100.

Very nice toy. Plenty of options. Only complaint is low light focusing and lack of a RAW file mode. (Has a tiff mode. That takes up too much space.)

I have a HP Photosmart 7150 to print the output. (Nice output. Only does borderless on 4x6 tabbed paper. Isn't economical if you print a ton.)

I'm waiting for the Canon Digital SLRs to drop in price so that I can use all my Canon A2's (35MM SLR) USM Lenses. I prefer using the A2 but the F100 is SO portable and I don't have to visit Target to get my film developed.

does anyone know why digicams have different limits on video length? is there a real technical reason or are companies just creating a difference between products?

I have the Minolta Dimage X

Pretty sweet camera except in really low light. But for what I do, as in just take snapshots of things on the go, it works fine.

I need to stop dropping it though.

Minolta Dimage X here, too. Love the compactness, the great 3x optical zoom in such a small package, the fast startup, I could go on and on.

I'm also looking forward to the Panasonic SV-AV30 mini-digicamcorder. Picture quality will kinda suck, but the idea of fitting HOURS of MPEG video on an SD chip is just too cool.

Sony F707, I got it last May for $630 after Sears pricematched an online price, it was originally $1k. It's been a great camera so far, no complaints.

As for the movie length, I think it depends on the manufacturer. Sony used to have a limit (5min?) I think it's called MPEG EX now and it lets you record as long as you want. I can store about 25 minutes on a 128MB Memory Stick

If you're looking for a present for a girl, I suggest the DCS U-20 for its size (pack of large gum), fast start up time (off to shoot: 3secs), ease of use, and the fact that it uses AAA batteries.

$240 at Good Guys.
