someone gave me a gateway tower because the hard drive died and they bought a new one (yeah awesome right). its a core 2 duo e6300 with 3gb ram and normal factory gateway parts. if i added 1900xtx to that would it be faster than my current system?

dual core opteron 175
2 gig ddr memory
raptor drives on raid
1900xtx

if i took my raptors and my video card out of my old machine and put it in the new one how much faster or slower do you think it would be? the slower of the two i am going to turn into a server/media center.

What GHz is your Opty running ?

It's doubtful the MooCow BIOS will give you much of anything with which to OC.

Depending upon your Opty (OEM or custom rig?) a 25% OC to 2.75 GHz would be a weener ... :p

If you decide to move the Radeon 1900 XTX over you might want to move your psu with it. That Gateway oem psu would most likely choke on a 120w video card.

* How much faster or slower than what?
You're not giving us anything to compare the Raptors to.
* How much faster or slower at what?
Faster or slower checking email... surfing... video encoding with Premiere Pro... Etc?

im saying take all my parts, put them together in the best combination as possible. opty is running stock at 2.2. i could overclock.

so from what i can tell, the core two duo is slighly faster. so i would upgrade the memory, put my 1900xtx in there and my raptors...would that be faster than leaving my current setup the way it is.

I can't see there being that much of a difference, E6300 @ 1.86Ghz vs your Opty @ 2.2Ghz, maybe slight.

But not enough, the whole point with these Intel chips is how overclockable they are. That E6300 would possibly clock up to 3Ghz, at which point it'd murder the Opteron.

Why not do the swap, but snag a cheap P35 board that overclocks?

i dunno, i think i would have better chance at overclocking my opty to 3. i got it to 2.6 easily when i first bought it but then down clocked it

ok after some part searching and bugging some friends of mine for parts here is what i have setup so far: (the goal is to have one machine strictly for gaming and the other as a media center pc hooked up to my 1080p screen)

PC1:
dual core opteron 175 (will overclock soon)
2 gig ocz ddr memory
9800 gtx
2 raptor drives on raid

PC2:
core 2 duo e6300
4 gig corsair ram
320gb hard drive
1900xtx
tv tuner card

is this way you would configure this hardware? or, since the core 2 duo is on ddr2 memory and has 4 gigs of it should i slap the 9800gtx in there and use that for me gaming rig? keep in mind the board for the e6300 sucks and i don't want to buy a new mobo for it right now and i will be overclocking my opty, hopefully to 2.8-3.0ghz
