I have an issue with any Linux distro using KDE or GNOME where menu response is slower then windows and launching apps is generally slow. Has anyone else noticed this? I don?t want to compare other environments because they don?t use many of the effects that KDE/GNOME use and therefore it?s hard to tell if they are slower or faster, also I prefer GNOME and KDE for the most part. GNOME over KDE.
I?ve used many computers but mainly I?m using my P4 1.6Ghz, 768 DDR RAM, 9700 Pro 128 Mb, an aging system but works flawlessly. Primarily I have messed around with Ubuntu, Debain, Gentoo, PuppyLinux, simplyMepis & VectorLinux. VectorLinux being the fastest of all, still launching apps is slower then windows. For example starting Gaim & Firefox under Linux vs Windows.
Most people on Linux keep telling me that Linux is faster then Windows, but from experience this has always been the opposite by far!
All my Linux setups use less cpu and ram then Windows but generally don?t feel very responsive. I?ve tried removing the minimize effects in GNOME but when you move the window it splits it up into sections and looks ugly, response time for menus didn?t change. In fact sometimes on a fresh boot you can see the icons draw very quickly, never happens under Windows.
I use fglrx under Linux and have no issues with it, I have the same response times with the default drivers. It?s not an issue with drivers! I can run Quake3/Doom3 with similar FPS when compared to windows. (Give or take 5%) I?ve also used XGL under Ubuntu with no real issues.
Any idea what the problem is? Any else feel this? It?s one of the things I can?t stand, also longer boot times in Linux, but I can bare that and there are way to optimize it.
