work is purchasing me a laptop.
It MUST be a Dell.
around 2000..give or take a couple $100
currently considering
Inspiron 700m
Latitude x300
Inspiron 8600

the 8600 is a little big for my liking but i like the features it includes(3d hardware/15.4 etc)
the 700m is the current leader in my mind due to its size and display.
the x300 is nice but im willing to sacrifice a pound or two in weight for more notebook(the 700m)

what do you suggest.
the 8600 is looking like the outsider atm......unless i can be convinced otherwise.

**btw wth is the proper term for the glossy veneer on newer notebook screens?

700m owner here, I love it, if your budget is ~$2k, order one with a big HD, extended battery, a gig of ram & a DVD burner.

What really impressed me was it's Wi Fi reception, moved my desktop into a room quite a ways from the router & had to go with a USB nic (& mount it high on the wall) to get decent reception, the 700m gets awesome reception where ever I put it in the room.

My only complaints are cosmetic, the white plastic around the keyboard is kind of cheesy, and in the review on the front page of AT, they felt the touchpad may not stand up well.

are you pleased with the screen quality?

The 700m is marketed as a small form factor multimedia notebook, and they really did a great job on the screen, it's awesome.

I haven't run any games, but the peeps in the SFF/Notebook forum should be able to give you some feedback.

another happy 700m owner here....got the 8hr battery and full package of upgraded ram and dvd/cdrw
VERY nice little lite package and screen quality is great for viewing movies/DVD's
playing games on the other hand can be a little tuff with the compact keyboard and the graphics quality can't handle much more than WC3 (about all i play)
definately worth the $800 i paid for mine :D (yay for dell coupons/sales/etc)

I love my 8600.. it lasts over 5 hours.. I've had it last 6 (I've flown from Toronto to Vancouver (5 hour flight) and sitll had an hour battery left.

I can play CS Source and everything on it no problem.

I don't find it to be to big.

Where is the option to NOT get a dell notebook? My family has 3 of them and old 1 of them is in good condition (mother's) because she doesn't use it often. Dells are looser than a bag of marbles, get an IBM and be done with it..
