You guys think I'm old? My dear old dad at 80 years of age ( UltraGeezerman) wants a dell laptop. He still works as an engineer. I know little about laptops, So far, we are looking at the XPS and the M6300 line. Any ideas? Thanks

My father the engineer uses the Dell Latitude. Whatever the 15.4" model is, that is what he has.

Now frankly, for the kind of engineering that he does, I don't think that he needed the upgraded graphics card, but he definitely needed the 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz (best at the time) processor. What kind of engineering does your dad do, that might help decide.

He's a petroleum engineer. He liked the biggest widescreen that the XMS line offers, but still wants Windows XP. He also wants 4GB of ram, so that means XP 64 bit.

XMS=corsair gaming ram
XPS=dell's generally overpriced gaming line of computers

Dell small business offers XP on the Lattitudes.

2GB is plenty for XP unless he is running some program that was designed to use more. If so, you/he should check whether that program is tested for XP-64 or Vista-64.

Same with graphics: does he run anything that can use accelerated graphics? Does that program need a CAD card instead of a gaming 3D card?

Does he use ASPEN? I don't think ASPEN has 64-bit support yet.
