Which Dell desktop should I buy my wife?

Basically, she has a Dell C400 laptop from her old job that is running win 2000 on it. Has the littel smbol that says built for XP but her compnay imaged all for win 2000. I've formatted it twice and after reloading tha damn company settings are still there. Just a pain in my arse. Makes it harder to netowrk printers and such since I can't override security, admin, etc. Anyways, after I mover her files onto a external hard drive, I'll format it agin and use it as a laptop station in my house for surfing the net - in my bathroom. Deep thinking.

So, I promised her a new desktop. Her basic needs are basic surfing and heavy use of MS office suite of products. She wants a Dell (wanted to give her my Sony MXS20 and upgrade but she won't have it). So I'm looking here and also here 2

Pentium D versus P4? Dell 5150 versus E310. My head is spinning. I don't want to buy her a less powerful machine as I know I'll inherit it in a few years, and want her to have a multi-tasking pc that's got some pick me up - but at a loss on which model. Suggestions on best value for her needs and ultimately my fun?

What? You've formatted the system twice, and the security settings and admin access is still set up on it?

Anyways, personally i think the 5150 is the best value. All you'll need to do is slap in a PCI-E GPU and you can game on it.

I would say the 5150 for $599, thats a pretty sweet deal for 2.8 dual core, 17" monitor, 1gb ram, and 80gb HDD. That should be more than enough for her Apps, and the dualcore will provide superior multitasking.

*edit*
Well there you go, Looney beat me too it. It must be the one🙂

Looney: Crazy I know on the formatting. I'm not advanced by any means but for the life of me can't tell why certain settings keep coming back. I'm going to give it a go again this weekend and see what happens. Thanks for the advice on the 5150. I keep equating D to Celron and have a bias towards P4. Now reading I see this D is dual core and most likely better than P4 with HT. What's the PCI-E GPU you reference - a graphics card? You've intrigued me 🙂

GuitarDaddy: Thanks for the suggestion - appreciated.

Yep, if she does a lot of intensive graphics work or plays games, you can install a PCI-express video card for better performance if you want.

That's because you didn't format. You just reinstalled Windows on top of Windows. If you're going to format, you need to be in DOS or boot the system with the Windows XP CD and delete the partition. Delete all the partitions! After you do that, create another partition and install Windows on that.

If you're going to use DOS, use fdisk to delete the partition. Once in DOS, type format c: (or whatever the drive letter is) and format that baby!
