Thanks for the last reply. I do this quite often to be honest...my hard drive looks nice and organized.

I thought that considering all the fuss that I have heard then some other utility would do a better job.

Keep the info coming!!

I have read here and there that this one is better than the other.
CNET has O&O and PerfectDisk better positioned that Diskeeper...

Still I would like to hear from Anandtech users what they prefer and why.

I am on the market for one...really need it.

May I quote that when I say really need it...it is not because my computer is a mess.

1. It would be for myself.
2. To organize clients computers.

Exactly what I was thinking. You know he's gonna though. If it costs money and ins't Microsoft, it must be better. :p

funny how many people like to know, or think they know, what other people think...

I'd love to be able to do that.

I may or may not buy it...I'm doing a lot of research before I decide.

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Contig.html

Run this overnight:
Contig.exe -s C:\*

If your hard disk continues to feel slow and you think a 'pro' program will do better, then go ahead. This contig program will defragment every file on your hard disk as much as it possibly can. Buying something for defragmenting is like buying something for copying files. You can do it just as good in DOS or Explorer, and there's no way you can do it any better.

If you want a Set It and Forget It, add "Contig.exe -s C:\*" to Windows scheduler.

Perfectdisk ruined a perfectly good installation. - It made all the data on my hdd move into a pretty pattern, but was crap for anything else - everything was so slow after that.

Diskeeper is being used now, no problems - set it to run between 3am and 6am. Seems nice.
Trouble is, I haven't seen any quantifiable evidence that it is better than windows defrag. But, it takes up little RAM, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
