Hey

I?m interested in building a new system (my C466 is getting old) and I would just like to know which CPU out of the following is the better one. These are the only ones I can source for a low price in New Zealand dollars.

Intel Celeron II 600A - FC-PGA -- NZ $320 -- US $134
Intel Pentium III-733EB - FC-PGA -- NZ $490 -- US $205
Intel Pentium III 650 - SECC2 -- NZ $460 -- US $192
AMD Duron 650MHz/Socket-A -- NZ $250 -- US $104
AMD Athlon K7-550MHz -- NZ $350 -- US $146
AMD Thunderbird 750MHz - Socket-A -- NZ $450 -- US $188

These prices are excluding tax. Anyway which one is the best buy for performance/price?

Thanks

are you overclocking. If you are get the duron 650. If you aren't the tbird 750 or the p3-733.

I plan not too. I just want a fast cheap CPU (don't we all?)
I'm leaning towards the P3-733.

I also want to get a GeForce/Geforce2 MX/TNT2 Ultra. If I can't afford the GeForce would the TNT2 U be ok?

To make a long story short, I'd agree with hans007, more or less.

Remember to consider the cost of your motherboard, of course.

BTW, forget the Cele 600. If your budget dictates a Celeron then be sure to get a Celeron II and go for the 533A, if available. The 600's are too expensive for the performance they offer and don't o'clock that well. Stick with the Tbird, Duron or P3.

Ah-hah. Not going to overclock, eh.

In that case its a no brainer - the P3 733.

Or the Tbird 750.

:)

Just depends on your preference for AMD or Intel.

OTOH, if you will be running FPU-intensive apps, then go for the AMD chip.

G'day.

And G'night.

EDIT:

Is it really about 3:30 p.m. down there?

Overclocking isn't too hard. Get the 700E, and a HSF like the: Gorb/Arctic cooler/alpha/GW.. Then throw it on a mobo, and set the fsb a bit higher. It'd be nice to have some pc133 memory, and to get the Geforce over the Tnt.

There isn't that much to fear when overclocking.

Most 700Es are capable of reaching up to a gigahertz with some good air cooling, paste, and case ventilation. You'll probably won't have to up the voltage that much either.

PROS: you'll learn a lot about cpus, and you'll get to brag to your friends your an o/cer to a gigahertz. You'll have a very fast computer, and be able to get higher fps in games. Your cpu won't be outdated in a while either.

CONS: You fry the chip, and have to get a replacement processor.

I'm not afraid about overclocking, its just it will be part-company-part-game-LAN PC and if I break it, the company will kick my ass real good :)

I also stated that those are the ONLY CPUs I can get cheap. The only ones. They are from seddy looking place which is miles from no-where so they don't get much stock but their prices are at least $100-300 dollars cheaper than everywhere else.

I will be running Half-Life/Quake3/Deus Ex/UT etc and I like Intel better than AMD.
The only mobo which supports the T/Bird the shop has run out of so I have to get a PIII anyway.

I'm planning on running a Abit VH6 which seems a good mobo for the price. If you guys can think of a better mobo or convince me to use the T/Bird please go ahead.

Man you are confusing me!! If is for a company, why would you be playing Games or care what the price for the cpu would be? Anyways is obvious that the 700e is going to be cheaper then the 733 at , since you prefer intel, over AMD, go with the i815 CUSL2 from asus for about 140 bucks. use the current PC100 ram and the stock h/f and bump up the fsb to 110 to give you 770 or 115 to give you 805 and the ram should still be within specs, and perform well. As for the Video Card Listen to HourMan!!! Again if you are not going to pay for the system buy a 800e if you are going to pay buy a 700e..

i'd much rather have a celeron and a geforce 2 than a t-bird or p3-700 and a TNT2 , just must opinion. If you play games. The tnt2 will suck much a$$.
