I was wondering which CPU is better. The Opteron 146 or the Pentium D 830? I have both but need to get rid of one so i was wondering which one I would get the best performance out of. Thanks in advance.

Not overclocked? I guess it really depends what you are doing. If shear performance (i.e. encoding, ripping, editing, multi-tasking, etc.) is what you're after, it's sad to say it, but that ol' netburst my serve you better. Plus you leave yourself a solid upgrade path on 775 with the DDR2 memory, etc.

It depends a lot on what you are doing with the PC. Your comparing a single core to a dual core, and even though pentium-d's are the worst of the dual cores, if you are running SMP aware programs, such as video encoding, the pentium-d will still be better despite being a flamethrower. If you are gaming on the other hand, the opty will blow it away.

Pentium-D advantages-dual core
Opty advantages- faster for non-smp aware applications, runs much cooler, uses less power, more overclockable.
