Which CPU

My system is currently based on S939 and I don't want to replace all my MB, CPU and RAM for now.

I do want to replace the CPU tho and I'm undecided in which one to choose from those two:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual Core Processor AM2 Windsor 2.2GHZ 512KBX2 65W 90NM

or

AMD Opteron 148 Processor S939 Venus 2.2GHZ 1MB L2 Cache 90NM 64BIT

Need advice please. This computer is mainly for gaming.

AM2 and 939 Have Same Performance

Well, since you have a 939 board you'll have to stay with the 939 CPU. You can't get the AM2 without changing your board. The AM2 is their newer tech (it's very similar to the older 940 chips) and it will be backwards compatable with AM3 when it comes out (even though that's a little down the road).

The performance on the on AM2 and 939 are very similar. AM2 utilizes DDR2 whereas 939 still uses DDR. As far as the gaming is concerned, getting a dual core doesn't buy you much. From what I have read, not a lot of games are taking advantage of the dual core functionality (that too is a little down the road). The dual cores are more for multitasking. You would be fine getting yourself an upgraded single core.

Thanks for the advice. I just pasted the wring X2 processor, mistook the sockets sorry for the confusion.

For almost the same price and for a more "long term" investments, I think I should get a Dual Core 4200+ and up.

cache do not effect in performance! A64 X2 3600+ 512KB Cache @ 2.6GHz is similar with A64 5000+!!!

Depends on your application/benchmark, e.g. Oblivion city benchmarks appear to benefit from extra cache (assuming non-GPU limited settings), and many productivity apps like to run from cache.

I went with a 4800 X2. Since I don't plan on upgragding for at least a year, I figured I may as well get the fastest that I can get. Ran some benchmarks with my CPU's at stock speeds.

and get it to 2.8-3.0,

no X2 can touch you then.

If you get a 4600 to 2.7, it will smash a 146 on multi-threaded apps.

Get a 3800,4200 or 4600, they seem to OC better with less cache.

Finally I've found a Athlon64 X2 4600+ for a nice price.
