I am not much of an overclocker. I up it just a bit. Now I am building a new computer and thinking of either
a 2800 Barton or a 2500 mobile xp. Now I know that 2800 Barton is locked and cannot be overclocked much
on the FSB and the Mobile XP's are unlocked and highly overclockable but given the fact the 2800 is faster in
the first place and I am not much of an overclocker, which one? Especially since from Mwave the 2800 is
about he same price.

the 2500mobile as you are bound to be able to turn it up to well beyond 2800 speeds.

I've got a 2800+, and I'm not overclocking, nor do I have any plans to do so. It scores pretty decent on 3dmark01, and plays all my games very nicely. If you aren't overclocking, go with the 2800+, otherwise, the mobile will overclock very nicely.

many mobiles usually get up to their speed rating, in GHz :Q
in other words, a 2400+ will get to 2.4GHz, 2500+ to 2.5GHz, etc.

My 2400+ runs at 3200+ easy.

I have a 2500 mobility running on a Abit NF7-S mobo...its running at 2332 right now, which is performance in excess of a 3200+, without even breaking a sweat. I have tried to push it to the point of it not functioning properly...With the right mobo the 2500 mobility is a bargin Proc.

Wow...this seems to be asked daily. Please use the search instead of kicking this poor dead horse some more.

Mobile Athlon 100%. Someone should make a sticky about the mobiles.

You would only have to overclock a tad to get the mobile 2500+ well beyond the desktop 2800+ specs. Plus you could be sure your mobile will run at 200mhz FSB, so more memory bandwidth for you, provided you've got some DDR400 memory.

Well if you don't plan to overclock at all then obviously the faster proc at the same price is the better deal, but if like you say, you plan to bump it even a bit, then you might as well go with the mobile.

thermostat:

Please do not email me stating that I flamed you when it simply is NOT the case. What you wrote in that email was selfish and childish, and could be seen as being harassment. I simply pointed out that this exact question is asked many times on these boards; I never said anything personal about you.

I'm too lazy to post any more links, but any rational member of these forums can surely see my point and will also realize that what I posted was clearly not a flame.

Well, I have never overclocked before I got my mobile, and I was able to get it to 2.5Ghz (what is that, like a 3600+?). It's a pretty simple process and actually fun as well to see how far you can go. I'd say give the mobile a try.
