Which cpu would be better suited for my configuration....A64 3000+ (Venice) or Sempron 64 3400+ (Palermo)?

OK.......my secondary rig's setup:

ASUS K8N4-E Deluxe mb (nForce 4 chipset Socket 754 mb)
Corasir VR 2 x 512MB
Seagate 120GB PATA hd
ATI (Powercolor) X700 128MB PCI-e video card

The rig is used for light internet browsing, occasional light gaming, and just mundane junk.....nothing very intensive at all.

My choices of cpu right now center on an A64 3000+ Venice core or a Sempron 64 3400+ Palermo core. They're $2 apart in cost..........so, which would give the better performance for the rig? Both run at 2GHz, the Sempron has half the cache (256 vs 512.)

Or should I back off, save $20 and get the Sempron 64 3100+ for $99?

Confused........

I say go for the 3000+. I'm not sure if things are the same with socket 754, but it's not uncommon to overclock them to 2.8ghz or so.

Sempron 3100. All these CPUs will top out around 2.3 to 2.4GHz. Wait for the Fry's special and pickup a Sempron 3100 plus an ECS 754 NF3 for $90.

From what I've been reading about the Fry's specials on the Sempy 3100+, most are Paris cores and not Palermo cores. Seems very hit-or-miss when it comes to what core you get, and mostly a miss on Palermos.

I'll take my chances on buying direct retail from Newegg or the like to ensure I get a proper core.

If they run at the same clock speed and are only $2 apart, by all means get the venice.

There is no guarantee when you overclock. Feel free to pay an extra $30-$40 on a CPU that may not get you beyond 2.5GHz. Why worry about the CPU core when you're using the system for "mundane junk"? Are you capable of differentiating a 2.3GHz and a 2.5GHz CPU will those applications?
