which cpu to choose

For AutoCAD I would think a pentium with HT would be better because they are better at vector math, if I'm not mistaken, which is used a lot in CAD programs. I know all the computers we have at work use Xeon processors for our CAD work.

For games AMD takes the win no contest. So it depends on how much of each you plan on doing. If you play more games then work with CAD I would go with AMD. If you do more CAD work go Intel. And if you do equal amounts of both get an X2 because you can do both at once!

The reason for the Xeons you have at work is probably that they were purchased prior to the dual core Opterons...and most IT guys back then didn't have enough data to reccommend AMD at all.
In testing however, the AMD architecture is quite superior in Autocad...

Since AutoCad has a number of multithreaded operations (though by all means not all), your best bet is a dualcore AMD CPU...the rest is just budget. (Opteron or X2)

Thanks for your replies.

I will be running mainly autocad lt or 3d architectural desktop. Gaming performance isn't a major issue, although I 'd like to play Quake 4, F.E.A.R., ... at 1600x1200 with max detail

I think the X2 will be the better choice as my budget is around 2500$.

Do you think the 7800gtx will be a good gpu for my system?

That's overkill (by a long shot) for Autocad, but for gaming you'll be smiling a lot!

well, the 7800gtx is by no means a bad choice. it is the best gpu out there. as long as you are willing to spend near 600 dollars on one... i guess that would be ok with $2500. i think you are going to be happy with your new comp. hehehe. i would recommend 2gb of ram. and, a very very good quality psu. thats important.

Right now, I'd pick the X2 4400 and the DFI Lanparty UT nf4 Ultra-D

Which ram should i choose, ocz gold looks fine. And should I pick 4x512 mb or 2x1024?

For the graphics card, I think it will be a Gainward.

I've still got some time to decide, as I'm only planning to purchase the comp by the end of September - beginning October.

Btw: my current system
P4 2.53 Ghz
512 mb PC2700 ram
Geforce 4 Ti 4600

Do you think it's still suited for Autocad?
As for gaming, it starts sucking.

Actually, a GTX model can be had easily sub-$500 now. But at any rate, they are rather expensive. 😀

I have pretty much the same system, just upgrade to a gig or more of ram and toss in a geforce 6800. The 6800 is pretty much the limit for that cpu, but it's good enough for anything out there now.

I mean you could spend the money, but I'd just do the upgrade and wait a while. See what the r520 has to offer and maybe watch the price of dual core fall a bit.

*edited because I am retarded and don't know how to type correctly

2x1024 for RAM... if you use 4 sticks the performance drops because of the way the AMD memory controller operates...
The RAM i am ordering and recommend is OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) Dual Channel Platinum
The mobo you picked is nice and on sale at the moment DFI Mobo $122 and it can be made into the SLI version with a simple pencil and 5 seconds of modding Anandtech's Ultra to SLI guide

Gianward use to be the BEST in graphics (in my opinion).. i have a Gianware GeForce4 Ti4600 right now that i still love. Check this out Gainwards 7800 GoldenSample Lineup 1.6ns memory hehe. the card is sw33t benchmarks for it

The only problem is i can't locate one for sale LOL So i recommend XFX PVT70FUNDE Geforce 7800GTX in its place.

Sorry for posting off-topic but I just want to keep things together.

As I'm only going for a slight overclock (just on air) I'm not sure anymore about the mobo. Which mobo do you think is the best considering stability, stock performance and slightly oc'ing?

And as for the upgrade suggestions: I've been considering this too, but I'm stuck with a crappy 300w q-tec psu. This is the main reason why I want a completely new system: I want a good case and psu. Any suggestions for these are welcome too.

I'm thinking about the silverstone tj06, tj05 and chieftec BX for the case and the ocz powerstream 520w, antec tp2 550w and enermax noisetaker 485w for the psu
