Which cpu/mobo will run on 145watts?

Hey,

I'm looking at my friend's Gateway P133 and it looks like a good one to upgrade. The case is ATX, and the hard drive is a new 20 gig, but the power supply is proprietary (shape only, connector is standard). If I could, I'd like to find a new motherboard and cpu that would work with it. So which processor/cpu takes the least power?

I assume that a board with integrated video would take a little less power. Do micro ATX boards take less power? A friend recently told me that CU Celerons took more power than CU P3s, which I find hard to believe. Is that true?

Would the new Cyrix (C3?) be good? There won't be any games on this computer.

Thanks in advance!

Well, the good thing about the C3 is that it has very low wattage. They say it can run with passive cooling. As for the performance...I couldn't tell ya if it's a winner or a dog cause I haven't seen any reviews. It's cheap though! Good luck.

edit: Hey! I found a review. It ain't pretty though... :Q If I were you, I would get a mid to low range Celeron (500-700Mhz) and use a it with a quiet but effective heatsink, like this without the delta screamah! I think a board with integrated video would be less power hungry. Here's an example. I don't see how a Celeron with less cache could be hotter than a PIII with more but I'm no expert on Intel chips.

A Celeron II system would be a good bet. The lower clocked models use very little power. A C533A is only ~ 11 watts. An Intel 810/815 based mobo with integrated sound and video would work. Take a look HERE for power draw of Celeron CPU's.
