Guys, heres the situation. I've been out of the OverClocking scene for a while. My current rig is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0 (not -E) with an old Athlon 2100+ oced to around 2800+. Now wanting to upgrade the Cpu only, which CPU has the best oc ability right now?

Also want to build a new rig, a A64 rig.. which mobo and cpu has the most potential? been digging around and seems like the 3200+ and msi k8n neo2 platinum is good? Which HS/Fan would be good for it?

Thanks for Big Help!

The XP-M2600+ is the best bet. Really you can't go wrong with the cheap mobile, either - XP-M2400+ $76 at Newegg. I have the same board and -Es. Mobiles work great in them.

thanks for the suggestions, but on getting the mobile processors. Is there barton cores? I would like to get bartons with more l2 cache. and when you oc urs to 218x11 thats around 2400mhz, what is the speed rating of it for amd?

Yeah, the XP mobiles from XP-M2200+ up are Bartons. That one is rated at 1667MHz, the 2400+ is about 1800, the 2500+ about 1863 and the 2600+ is 2000. Going off the top of my head but that's about right. But that's way underrated since they are laptop CPUs originally.

since they are laptop cpus, will the performance be lower compare to regular desktop cpus?

also those with amd 64s.. is the 3000+ winchester better than the 3200+ winchester? Monarch computer has the 3000+ for 126 right now.. think that would be a good cpu to go along with the msi k8n neo2 platinum?

No, with an OC the performance is amazing with those processors. Try the 2600+ XP-M as said above. With a little luck and some volts you could easily hit 2.5+ Ghz.

Both the 3000+ and 3200+ will reach the same OC, most expeirenced OCers are getting 2.5-2.7Ghz out of them, (that is top of the line FX55 performance, 4000+++ which is a $800 CPU)).
The diff between the two is 3000 is 9x and 3200 is 10x, so if your mobo has trouble reaching 300HTT you probably want to go 3200, if your mobo can do 300HTT then 3000+ is fine. I learned this the hard way, my AV8 can only do about 280HTT so i am limited to 2.5Ghz on my 3000+, if i had gotten the 3200+ i would be at 2.6-2.7Ghz, but since this was my first OC i am still happy.
By the way i am using the stock HSF that comes with the retail boxed version and it is fine, no temp pblms at 2.5Ghz OC, and some are using it for 2.6Ghz without heat issues. If you were set on wanting to reach 2.7 then you may want to get a better HSF, but for 2.6Ghz and down the stock is fine.

They aren't exactly "laptop CPUs", while they are intended and tweeked a little for laptops, they are physically identical to desktop bartons. However they've been selectively binned by AMD because they can opperate at their rated speeds with less voltage required than their desktop counterparts. A 2GHz XP-M runs @ 2GHz on 1.45v, whereas a 2GHz XP runs @ 2GHz on 1.65v. Give a XP-M 2600+ the desktop 1.65v and it could very well run @ say 2.4GHz with relative ease although with overclocking its always YMMV, however I don't really know of any Barton Mobiles that can't hit at least 2.2GHz stable at the desktop default of 1.65v, and 2.2GHz (11x200) just so happens to be the fastest Athlon XP released to the market (the 3200+)
