What are you getting for a power supply? You do realize that case doesn't come with one? If this is a pure gaming machine, the single core 3800+ would probably be better than the X2 3800+ unless you absolutly plan to over clock. If you are doing photo editing, or video encoding, or something else that can use the second core, then I would stick with the dual core.

EDIT: argh I need to get my brain checked, you said what you were using it for and I didn't see it lol. Yeah, the dual core will work nicely for you.

You said engineering work. Get a cheap graphics card for now so you can get one of those workstation graphics cards later on.
