Which CPU for MSI 6163Pro?

Hello,

I'm no oc expert so looking for help. Over the last 1.5 years of running my cel300a at 450MHz, my reliability has steadily dropped. I think I left the unit on overnight too many times so i'm not sure if its the cpu, video card, memory, mobo or power supply (its 250W). After my system wouldn't post, I replaced the abit bh6 to a msi6163Pro, reformatted the hd, and switched to a crummy 8mb video card (terminator 2x/i) which helped but now i cant get above 75Mhz.

1) Should I try to upgrade components to salvage the 300A back to 450MHz? If so, which things should I replace? power supply, video, memory? No way to test this
stuff at home.
2) Should I get a new cpu for the MSI6163Pro? If so, which one? I have the latest bios installed.
3) I am a raving idiot and I need to stop oc'ing and buy an emachines cel533!

Other Specs: dual cpu fan 3pins to cpu, 2 nics (cable modem+sygate+lan :D), wintv pci, isa modem, isa awe32 sb, 64M PC100 CAS3 (i didnt know better then)

Thanx in advance!

I gave my MSI6163pro to my wife and ran a Celeron 366 PPGA @550mhz for the longest time... it now has a Celeron II 533a @950mhz 1.8volts with the newest bios also... Just my opinion but with the newer Celeron`s II`s that is... it allows you to run PC100 ram (good of course) and does not overclock the PCI to far out of spec (this pertains to the C2 566 and up they have an 8.5 or higher mutiplier). Not that the P3`s based on the 100mhz buss speed would not be a bad choice but when you get to the 133fsb area of OC`ing... your AGP card and ram had better be top notch...

BTW the 533a I have will also run 1008mhz 1.85 but gets a little hotter than I would like... but will run 800mhz 1.50volts and very cool too...

I hope this answers some of your questions...

I have a MSI 6163pro for nearly a yr now...great mb and very stable in o/cing...first cpu was a 450@630 on 140fsb

I now have a piii700@945 at 135 fsb...both setups have been rock stable my second cpu the 700 runs at 138 w98 fine but games crash after 20-30 min...cpu is not stable need s better cooling than my golden orb....

This mobo is great for o/cing in my opinion...I got the piii450@630 and mobo from compuwiz1

I would get whatever cpu you want to o/c just make the memory and videocard will be ok...I run a pci V5 5500 to avoid the agp issue...just gets too far out of spec

Thanks, about the memory, any recs? I ordered a 64M PC133 DIMM from crucial yday. Does the CL timing still make a big difference? Anyone getting good results with CL3?

Check on your I/O chip (=bios?) chip if you got a blue sticker there with a C on it. If so, your mobo supports all coppermines. If not they might still work (with a slotket)or at least if you get an powerleap neos370 adapter

My msi 6163pro did not have any blue sticker which I know they say you need to run a coppermine...I am using MSI slotket and the chip runs fine up to 135fsb at 138 I get 3d game errors ....so maybe not the best board ??? unless you have the blue sticker...I would be interested what results people have had with mobo if there is a blue sticker....

Interestingly my chip a piii700@945 at 1.65v but no matter what I do with voltage just not stable at 138/140 fsb...I know my ram and mobo can handle the 140fsb with no problems because I o/c at piii450@630 on 140 fsb even ok to 142fsb

I checked earlier, there is no blue sticker on my i/o chip (but I didn't buy the mb that long ago, <9 mos?). From these posts and others I've talked with, sounds like oc'ing the cel533 or 566 should work best.

I also discovered my crappy AGP 8MB herc terminator 2x/i video card was a major source of my problems (Intel graphics chip, what can you expect), even with sidebanding disabled. I reverted back to an old 4mb trident AGP card and I can run at 100MHz for 1-2 hour periods. Bartman steered my towards the GF2 MX as a good upgrade, I ordered it Thursday ! Maybe with the Crucial PC133 CL2 memory, MSI slocket, and golden orb hs/fan I can get 933 too :D. Thanx again!

Good for you AbsolutZero on the MX I dont think you`ll be disappointed with it... I prefer the Iwill II to the MSI master mainly because the profile is lower and before I had Alpha`s (PAL35T`s) I modded GW FDP32`s to work with P3`s & Celeron II`s, I found that the raised area of plastic on side of the cpu (cover for the lever movement) was to high to allow a GW FDP32 to fit flush with the shorter slug of the FCPGA slockets... Also I had better OC`ing results with the Iwill II`s on an MSI board no less???
