Hello guys i want to buy a cooler for my q6600. The stock cooler is really bad. My cpu temps reaches 100c when watching a hd video or playing counter strike source :( then the cpu drops to 1.6ghz. It idles at 60s.
So i am confused if i should buy the Rosewill RCX-Z2 7 or MASSCOOL 8W553B1M3 both are under $20 from newegg. My motherboard is gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2.

Something doesn't seem right. Are you sure the heatsink isn't just clogged with dust? The stock cooler shouldn't be that bad.

If the stock cooler is letting your temps hit 100c, something is wrong. My old Q6600 never hit 100C on the stock cooler even after I overclocked it to over 3 GHz.

Yea it did had alot of dust so i cleaned the stock cooler but even after that the cpu was hitting 100c very fast :\. I also opened the case yesterday and reinstalled the stock fan and it made no difference :(. I have ordered the rosewell cooler so hopefully that will make this sucker good

Is this a recent development? And how did you clean the dust off the heatsink? did you put fresh thermal paste on the cpu? once you took the heatsink off you have to use new paste.

Maybe the heat is not transfering to the heat sink. Maybe it should be taken apart, cleaned new paste applied and put back together. The new cooler will do abount the same thing. Sometimes if you have a variable speed fan it can stop running or be slow to start back up or just be too gummed up to restart. I cleaned a computer once and did not hook up the fan properly. Moving the computer around also sometimes knocks the heatsink loose.

I bought this comp used from craiglist. I didn't have any of the paste thingy so i just cleaned the fan (had an whole layer of dust on it) and reinstalled it but that didn't help :(. The comp also have a big fan in the back to take out air from the computer. I thought it was normal for an old used q6600 to hit 100c on stock cooler :\

Btw guys did i got a bad deal? comp was $200 here are the specs.

that is most likely your problem. after removing the heatsink, you need to clean both surfaces, cpu and sink, with a solvent. 90% isopropanol alcohol works well. and don't use too much paste. just a bead the size of a grain of rice or 2.

and the push-pins on the heatsink can sometime be a problem when installing.

You got a great deal if all is in working order. Your heatsink probably needed cleaning and reapplication of TIM. The cooler you bought might be a little better than stock but don't expect miracles. It seems to have a pre-applied paste and is PWM, a very straight forward installation. Whenever you remove a heatsink from the chip you must clean and re- apply new paste.
