Which CPU Cooler better ? Horizontal or Vertical ?

Are the Horizontal Mounted Coolers ( Blowing air onto motherboard ) or Vertical Mounted Coolers ( Blowing air out of the back of the case ) , better ?

Currently have a Zerotherm Nirvana 120mm ,

Looking to buy Xigmatek HDT-S1283 (Vertical) or Xigmatek HDT-S1284(Horizontal) coolers ( so that it cools the motherboard )

Dont know if they will be better than Nirvana

Anybody has any other horizontal cooler to recommend ?

Depends on the overall airflow of the case. I like tower coolers better because they allow me to run stuff passively.

And it's hard to compare when 1 has 3 heatpipes and the 4 heatpipe design is somewhat poor as the outside 2 pipes are mostly useless.

Ahoy Wolf,

That scallawag, Rally Master, beats me to it again. If ye 'ave a case like the XClio WT (WindTunnel), then a deck-like design would work better while a mast-like design would be at cross purposes. Fer yer normal airflow pattern cases, a mast-like design would generally work better as the deck-like air flow would be partly at cross purposes. Yarrr....

what case are you using? I think cpu coolers depend a lot on the ventilation and fan config of your case not to mention if they will fit or not.

What are you talking man ?

with that one looks like a vertical would be better since the 120 mm would push more air than the 92 mm side. On the other hand I've heard people have had to remove the rear fan on their antec 900s to get the xigmatek to fit so you'd need to be absolutely certain with measurements.

I upgraded from Thermalright Ultra 90 to Xigmatek S1283. The difference: NONE. Don't waste your money like this, keep them for something worthy.

I've got a slightly modified LL V1000B & i've found for me that a "down blowing" HSF works best.
I've got the Enzotech Extreme-X on my slightly overclocked Q6700. My idle temps average 35c on all 4 cores with a room ambient of 29c.
I'm also running a HD4850 & have my side panel fan set as exhaust. I think that helps too.

The thermal resistance ratings of the tower coolers seems to have trumped earlier "flat" designs by the same manufacturers. That being said, I can't keep track of newer entries that depart from the tower design. For instance, Tullphan mentions one of them.

With the newer Penryn processors and steppings, it hardly seems to matter much for CPU cooling. But the flat design makes "motherboard-ducting" easy, and therefore better cooling for motherboard components with -- or without -- fiddling with ducts.
