French president's cuisine quality remarks earn dinner invite

BRUSSELS (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac's reported criticism of cooking in Finland and Britain has earned a dinner invitation from a European parliamentarian, but the president has to bring the wine.

In an open letter on Wednesday, Finnish lawmaker Alexander Stubb said he had noted "colourful versions" of statements attributed to Chirac in the press and that they had also caught the eye of his British wife.

The French newspaper Liberation reported on Monday that Chirac had commented about Britain's cuisine by saying that "after Finland, that is the country where you eat the worst."

"In order to revise your unfortunate impression of Finno-British cuisine my wife and I would like to invite you to join us for dinner at our home in Genval, Belgium at your convenience," Stubb wrote.

"We will endeavour to obtain authentic Finnish and British ingredients in order to avoid disappointment," he went on.

He said the menu, planned by Finnish celebrity chef Jyrki Sukula, would include: fish and chips - roe of vendace with Lapland potato chips, cep broth with turnip rye pie, rack of baby lamb from Aaland with nettle mash, and Finnish berries marinated in Arctic brambleberry wine with beestings pudding.

"We hope that, as the president of an esteemed wine-producing country, you could provide the wines for the dinner," Stubb wrote.

Chirac has come under withering fire in the British and Finnish media since the Liberation story was published.

I'll add a poll if the people demand one.

and yes, it's probably a repost

EDIT: random countries added

Thats pretty funny, I was sure they would have said we have the worst food. Though I guess you can't really call American food the worst since we have a mix of everyones food here...

I hope he accepts the invite and actually goes, that would be pretty cool

Yeah, any food with "blood" or "kidney" in the title doesn't sound too appetizing to me.

ROFL. Gross generalization, but close.

I do love bangers and mash... wait, that's Irish, isn't it?

Definitly Irish, and very good. That was the one and only time when beer was actually drinkable, somehow the bangers and mash made it actually taste decent!

French Food is pretty sketch. They do a lot of fancy stuff, but overall you can't eat on the cheap....they suck with their selection.

French what do they have escargot? Has any one ever seen a French restaurant except in France? Chirac should have never tried to play hard ball with America his approval rating is what a staggering 25%?

I find bistro food to be much more enjoyable than expensive French cuisine.

No way! They may have a limited selection of foods (man was I sick of chips when I was there), but it's hard to beat pub food!

Man, you love anything. Any opinions on Filipino food?

Also, is Finnish food similar to Swedish/Scandinavian food (gravlax, etc?). If so, Chirac needs to expand his palate, I have to say I've had some excellent Scandinavian food from Aquavit and Scandinavia House.

I'm from New England.

That's the way my mother always cooked.

I was 20 before I discovered that "string beans" were green and not gray. 😀
