Which Core 2 CPU to buy?

XMan

So I got a good deal on a Rev 3.3 DS3. Couldn't resist it, what can I say?

I've got a Zalman 7700Cu I'm going to be using - I don't have think I have the room for a Tuniq, and surely that will be better than the stock heatsink.

Should I get a 6300 or a 6400? I'd like to shoot for 3.2-3.5 on the overclock. I'll probably break down and buy some Firestix to go along with.

Depends on the ram buddy. If you get Micron DDR2 800 ram, you could easily hit the same clock with the 6300 as the 6400.

If the difference in pricing between the 6300 and 6400 are make or break for your ram funds, then get the 6300 so you can get Micron D9's to go with it.

This is an example of some high quality D9GMH ram.

Here's a list of quality ram companies so you can reliably distinguish between Micron D9 ram and other ram before buying, as you want to have the head-room of 1100MHZ speeds when over-clocking with an E6300.

The DS3 has no problem with 2.1V RAM. Just boot with one stick, then up the VDIMM to +0.3 the boot with all of them.

Search the forums for "memory guide" and there's an excellent thread that'll give you all you need to know about memory.
