Which Cooler to buy ?

Leopardos

Senior member
Hello,

I want to OC my pc to 4Ghz (Q9550)
Im at 3.4Ghz with thermaltake tmg i1 (Clips cooler) 72c MAX with Prime95 for 7hours.. its not bad since its Clips cooler..

I want to OC to 3.8 or 4Ghz ... Which Cooler do u recommend ? Corsair H60 or 70 OR 80 ?
Notice that i live in a place where the weather reach 30-35 during the summer ..
Its now getting down to 25 during the day and 16 at night .. which means that my room temp around 20-24 ...

Will one of this coolers get my 4Ghz near 70 with FULL load using Prime95 ?
Or buy another brand ? what do u suggest me to do ?

Thanks

I have no idea what the selection of coolers is at your corner of the world... hard to really recommend anything specific without seeing what's available and at what relative pricing. All I can say is more general advice. Noctua and Thermalright make high-performing air coolers. Corsair Hydros are pretty good but not really any better for the price than air coolers. Scythe Mugen 3 is a pretty well performing cooler at much less $ than the aforementioned. Prolimatech Megahalems heatsink is highly regarded, but pretty expensive and needs a separately bought fan.

Just ignore the price ... Is the Hydro H80 good enough to cool the cpu at this speed compared to ‎Noctua NH-D14 ? Which one is better ?

Personally, I am considering the Thermaltake FRIO OCK or Coolermaster V10 (w/ peltier),

Both are capable of handling a minimum of 200 watts. My Alternative picks are the Coolermaster V8 or Prolimatech Genesis (don't forget to buy the clips for $3). I am also looking for suggestions for or against any of these top tier high performance coolers.

That's a good sugggestion, but you have to make sure you can mount a radiator in your tower. In my case, I cannot do that. Plus you have to take concern with possibility of pump failure.

Well .. i saied ignore the price .. but as i see after searching benchmarks in google ...
I found that the ‎Noctua NH-D14 is better in 4Ghz speed , also 4.5Ghz againts the H80 ... also something around half the price ...

I guess i will buy it tomorow ... do you agree with me ?:X

Thats realy lame bad luck ..
After i have decided ... i figured out the this cooler wont fit with my Corsair Dominator memory !!!!!!!!!!

Is there any other Cooler i could buy which will fit ? same level as the ‎Noctua NH-D14 ?

I think the Coolermaster V8 fits with in the bracket area of the CPU and doesn't hang over the ram slots. I beleive it will work well with 99% of all motherboards (and I've read about 20 professional reviews so far). Plus, it performs competitivly with the Noctua at half the price ($44 shipped from newegg). The V10 adds more cost, radiators, heatpipes, and thermal electric cooling.

V8

Okey i will check it ...
just one last thing .. i didnt find any thing on the net ..
But will the NH-C14 fit with my Corsair dominator DDR2 ( cant remove the heatsinks ) using Gigabyte EP45-UD3P ?

Well, ignoring price, you could just go with the most expensive cooler you can find - it will undoubtedly cool your CPU adequately.

NH-D14 is better than Corsair H80: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/corsair_hydro_h80/4.htm

It has great RAM heat spreader clearance, photo courtesy of our admin Idontcare:

The photo is from this thread. To me it looks like there's plenty of room - nearly twice the height of the Ripjaws extension. I didn't realise Corsair Dominator is so tall though. Standard low-profile RAM is 32mm tall, Ripjaws is 40mm, but the Dominator is a whopping 54mm which indeed means it won't fit. Sorry 🙁

Unless you go with the Corsair Hydro, you could consider Noctua NH-C14 and remove the lower fan, which will provide a clearance of 65mm, plenty for the Dominators.

Okey ...
Just let me breathe .. im realy in a big miss here !
I want to upgrade my pc , im in a hury , i have no idea why ..

Lets get it clear now ... forget the cooler atm ..
My pc specs is :
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
Intel QuadCore 9550 C1 Ver.
Radeon HD4870X2 2GB
2x2GB Corsair Dominator TwinX CL5 Dual Channel 1066Mhz

I have the H80 budget at the moment .... i could buy alittle more expensive Part for my pc ( to upgrade ) its not a problem ..

Im running my pc with 3.4Ghz with good temperture .... Since the H80 price is 1/3 of the GTX570 OC Version ..
What would be the best upgrade for me ? Buying the H80 and OC to 3.8Ghz or 4Ghz with the same GPU ? or Buy the GTX570 with same CPU speed(3.4Ghz) ? Which will make the PC faster?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my TON of questions .. as i saied in a miss situation right now ..

I would seriously give the ThermalTake Frio OCK a good look. Its an air cooler but performs just as well as corsair's H80. As far as I am concerned, air cooling is much more reilable than water. I'd even bet you could run this thing fanless at stock speeds.

Great .. i will look at this Cooler .. but what would say about my last post ? what would you go first ? GTX570 with Q9550 3.4Ghz or HD4870X2 with 3.8Ghz ? for better experience in gaming ...

There's no question that a video card upgrade would benefit you more than a slight OC on the CPU. But the GTX 570 is pretty expensive.

The problem here is that both your CPU and GPU are pretty good but not great. Upgrading either of them from pretty good to great is going to cost a lot of money. Overclocking is pretty minor thing, it won't suddenly transform your CPU to great. That said, overclocking the CPU would be a pretty good way to extend the performance of your current setup until the performance increases to be gained from new components become more affordable.

So upgrading the cooler is a good idea. You can transfer it to LGA1155 later. If you want to get rid of the 4870x2 as well, consider an MSI 560 Ti Hawk or similar which is factory overclocked near GTX 570 speed. Even a slower 560 Ti could be worth it even though it'd be a sidegrade in terms of average fps (though you could still try to OC it yourself). It'd lower GPU noise, temperature and power consumption while getting rid of dual-GPU issues and giving you DX11.

I think your existing hardware is sufficient. I would certainly consider that an upgrade from what I have right now.

Everyone in this forum has offered great suggestions.

Personally, I would narrow your choices down to a handfull of candidates, then read as many reviews as you can find (20 or 30) on each one. Figure the pro and cons as well as look for fitment issues like ram clearance or clashes with cases. Do your best to find as many negative features about each one. Then decide from there.

In my opinion, the better it fits with in the AMD or Intel Specified Cooler area, the better the choice. Especially if its performance is close (or a tad less 1-3&#176😉 to that of another cooler which takes up much more space outside the CPU area.

I posted this earlier for someone on the Frio OCK:

a) It's a GREAT cooler, I can guarantee it'll lower your temps by at least 20C.
b) It's a LOUD cooler, I can guarantee you'll hear it very well lol
c) It's a BIG cooler, but it fit with my g.skill ripjaw RAM I used to have with no problem, and the heatsinks on those are MASSIVE. So I'm pretty sure it'll not block out your ram.

As far as the upgrading is concerned, to be honest I agree with lehtv in terms of upgrading. It depends on how much you game, what you play, and what settings you're comfortable with. A 570 is a great card no doubt, and no doubt it'll definitely see the most performance gain from upgrading the GPU in your specs.

Thermaltake has a new FRIO OCK set to be released soon, it addresses some issues regarding fans. The new FRIO will allow for over the counter fan replacement vs the custom fan cover that was on the 1st gen FRIO OCK.

A slower fan will undoubtedly hamper the Frio's performance, it'll be just an average performing cooler if you don't let it make noise.

Pretty much the only reason to get one of those self contained water coolers is for the looks or if you have some weird tiny case.

Price for price the big heat sink air coolers are better in performance and noise.
