I decided to put my computer together this time, and I seem to have got at least one lemon compenant that I can't find. I list the syptoms first, then each compenent.
When running Windows ME, I consistently lock on the Windows ME logo screen when first booting. I have to press reset, and when the system boots up again I am giving the option to boot into safe mode. I choose normal, and the system comes up fine. This happens every time I do a cold boot. A reboot, once the system is already up and running does not have this problem. My memory is from Crucial, 256 MB PC2100 DDR. They suggested I download DocMem and try it out. With DocMem I could hardly get the test completed. I could run the base memory test through several iterations without a problem. But when I tried to run the extended memory test the system would lock. I tried selectively disabling specific tests to see what behaviour I would find. Most of the tests locked, but the Walking Data '1' caused divide by 0 errors, and the MATS+ caused the system to reboot. I tried the memory in both sockets of the motherboard with the same results. Checking the BIOS does not show the system running particularly hot, the highest CPU temp I have seen is 48C, idling aroud 41C.
So I had the memory replaced assuming that was the problem. No luck, I get the exact same problems. I went ahead and upgraded to Windows 2000 and while installing I got two identicle errors that appears on the screen the said Disk I/O error, Status 00000200. I didn't cause any problems though and the system continued to install. Through all the reboots and everything, I didn't have a single problem. After I finished the installation, I shut the computer off. In the morning when I used the computer, same thing. It begins to load the OS, after the post, and the system locks. Checking the event log in Windows 2000 I see occasional errors that I don't understand:
While validating that \Device\Serial2 was really a serial port, the contents of the divisor latch register was identical to the interrupt enable and the receive registers. The device is assumed not to be a serial port and will be deleted.
Only once has the system locked when trying to launch an application (WordPerfect 2000).
Okay, here is the system:
Elitegroup K7S5A Motherboard, with the SiS 735 Chipset
Retail AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz, with heatsink and fan
IBM Deskstar 60 GXP 40 GB drive (on IDE channel 1) SMART enabled
Enhance 350W ENP-0735 power supply, AMD recommended
Gainward Geforce II MX-400 w/64 MB RAM
Toshiba 16X DVD Rom (on IDE channel 2)
HP CD Writer 7500 (Was not installed at the time of the problems, on IDE channel 2)
Iomega ATAPI zip 100 (on IDE Channel 1)
Amient HaM modem
Windows ME OS at first, later installed Windows 2000
