Which company has a more solid reputation and has better builds? eVGA or XFX? I'm looking at the 7900GTX both at stock, not OC'd.

I think EVGA has a better warranty, and Step Up is a great plus, although I doubt something newer is coming out in the next 3 months. Who knows, though. I had an XFX 6800GT which acted up in strange ways that I never got pinned down, but the EVGA 7800GTX I've had the last year has been rock solid and a 7900GTX non-uber-super-duper-OC is on the way from Step-Up now.

Also believe you're allowed to modify stock cooling, as long as you return it to original cooling if you have to RMA.

yeah i think XFX's 6 series cards were pretty ropey, specially at the begining. but they were Nv's 7 series launch partners so they have stepped up the quality considerably

I think XFX lets you OC under the warranty too.

eVGA has the better warranty, but it's not applicable for the most part for 7900GTXs, you're not going to swap out the heatsink and there are no graphics cards expected in the next 90 days, which means that the step up facility isn't going to happen. As such XFX's warranty is equal.

I don't know about quality in general, but eVGA did have a bad batch of 7900GT cards recently, i can't remember XFX having the same.

I've got an XFX 7800GT, i'm kicking myself for not getting eVGA (as i'd now have a 7900GT(X?)) now, but your situation is different to mine.
