Which chipset

I am getting a new motherboard and I'm undecided on which chipset. Either the P35 or the X38. I wouldn't overclock but I want a little future proof technology, which one would be better? And this would be for games.

Hmm...future-proofing is always a tough one.

The only real advantage that the X38 has over the P35 is the PCI Express 2.0 which has double the bandwidth that the P35 (PCI Express) has.
On the other hand, X38 is pricey and video cards right now aren't bandwidth limited anyway.

So it really is a price issue.

Hope that helps.

This may come as an interesting recommendation. To futureproof your particular computer I would buy a 780i.

You already have an 8800 ULTRA and once the price comes down you can purchase a second 8800 ultra and increase your fps quite a bit.

I will probably get flamed for recommending an Nvidia chipset but at stock they work quite well, overclocking they are a bit on the flaky side though, but you won't be overclocking.

Why are you getting a new board? I'd stick with P35 for now. The X38 is pricey and I really don't see what you're getting for your $$$ in the end.

In terms of future proofing, but the time DDR3, PCI-Express 2.0 and anything else in the pipeline are common place and new processors/sockets surface you'll probably be in the market for a new board anyway.

He is running a 975x. Although stable they are a bit outdated. He may need some of the new features of P35/X38/X48/P45 and 780i.
