I am going to buy either a C1 1.8A or 2.0A and hope to hit 3 Ghz. Back when I was into northwoods, the 845D & 845G chipset, including the 4G4A and P4B266, were the ones to go for. Now I see most are getting either the PE or the Granite Bays? I am not sure which is right for me, I only have one stick of RAM so Granite bays dual channal would be of no use to me. So the way I see it is PE or 845 chipset. What are the advantages of each? I remember the 845s were very overclockable but are they slow compared to the PE chipset? Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks

i845PE chipset is a very good one
my friend has an asus p4pe and ive gotten his 1.6a to 2.6ghz

abit it7max2 version2 is also a good one

an older chipset board and also a good overclocker would be the asus p4b533, along with the abit it7max

ChampionAtTufshop, by chance, have you seen all the threads of people having problems with the i845pe chipsets? :)

no board/chipset is perfect
for example, i know for a fact that the onboard sound will most likely crap out around 150fsb and over on asus p4pe, so if that poses a problem you may wnat to reconsider.

for my friend thats not a problem, he wasn't about to use onboard sound anyways
he is quite content with his board/overclock and i cant blame him

they are suggestions, and i would advise the buyer to thoroughly (as best as they can) check out any problems once he/she has made a somehwat decision on the board of choice. pay is still undecided, and i was just throwing a bunch of boards out in the air which have been known to be decent/good overclockers as that seems to be the primary goal.

Then why didn't you suggest the P4B533? Still a smashing board, and had half the problems the P4PE does...;):)

The PE boards dont seem that bad. Cold boot issues are the big one. Other than that, they look good. I still prefer 845D/E over them. You have to do your research and read the threads before you pick a board. People were recommending the P4B266 despite all the problems it had even though there were much better 845D boards available. Make your own decision based on the info available. FWIW, I'd take a P4B533 over a P4PE

Good solid board, overclocks well. There is a simple trick to get the 3:4 mem ratio working. Before this was found, I wasn't very thrilled with it.

and boy did this spark things up with people after the trick was found
if i had a choice i too would pick p4b533, because i dont really care much for the features

it would be either that or abit it7max

Whats the "trick" you guys are talking about? What about the 4G4A? How does it compare with the ASUS

the 648 doesnt support hyper threading. the 655 dual channel is out, and the newer past the 648 chipsets sis is releaseing suppose hyperthreading.

I have a P4B533 and would really like to know the 3:4 trick. Could someone please enlighten me or steer me in the right direction.
