Which Chipset? Sis735 or KT133a?

Disclaimer Will start this out by strutting my nerd prowes by saying I have been building PCs for 10 years. I have done extensive (to the point that its obsessive) research on the matter and really don't need much more than an honest, guy to guy (or girl to be completely PC) opinion.

I am thinking I am going to finally belly up to the bar and put my main rig to rest. I used to be a real bad upgrader. I would pretty much make a major change to the hardware (video, ram, cpu, hard drive) every 6 months. Now that Uncle Sam is no longer giving me money to go to college (aka buying me computer parts) and I don't want any more credit card debt, its hard to blow 3 or 4 hundred bucks without wondering if I am going to pay bills. Still, my ole celeron 366 (OC'd to 453) is starting to cough and weeze and I had to drop it down to actual specs to get it to run. Yeah, I know...blasphemy. So, I have cast my lonely eyes towards some upgrades and probably will go with a Duron ghz or better. May even drop the little extra cash down and spring for a Thunderbird or a low end XP if i get real froggy, but I wanna keep ahold of my RAM now that prices have shot up on DDR. I still kick myself for giving away my stick of DDR i was saving to my little sister's build I was doing. Sigh, but I digress...

Which Motherboard should I go with? I wanna stick with Non-DDR mobos and use my ram over again. My 2 canidates are the KT133a chipset or the SIS735 chipset. Both have their strong points and weaknesses. The KT133a i can score in some really nice refurb prices on newegg and get some nice overclocking features for my new unlocked Duron that I will be obtaining. But, there has been multiple moans and wails about conflicts and issues with VIA chipsets and there is no room for upgrade. I buy a new mobo if i want any CPU passed 1600 or so and DDR. The SIS735 is super cheap, and I have done a build with it before. It can be a bit finiky with getting it up and running, but alot of the posts I have read on OCWorkbench have given me new hope of its overclocking abilities. Its not like I am going to try to water cool and push the thing passed 1.5, but I might bump it up a little to give me that little bit of self satisfaction of stickin it to the man. Not to mention it makes the girls go crazy and want your bod. Plus, it has the best chance of being bios upgraded to allow higher CPUs and DDR. Not to mention it hangs with the best of them in benchmarks.

Extras like Raid dont matter (I dont have that kinda money to buy double hard disks, even though it would be cool), audio (I really dont want to add to my collection of parts lying around by ditching my Santa Cruz, but if i get real good audio onboard, what's the point of keeping it in and using an IRQ), or LAN. It would be nice to have LAN onboard to get rid of my nic.

Anyway, what do you think?

a KT266a board that takes SDRAM...and DDR, 2 each...
Try shuttle...AK32L
leaves room for upgrades...

I didn't know there were kt266a boards with SDRam slots....all the ones I have seen were only DDR....hmm...guess I gotta do more research.

go to www.spacewalker.com select USA ...the AK32L is new. $67 on Pricewatch...I think they want something to go after ECS...
supposed to be like a AK31 with 2 SDRAM and 2 DDR slots...

Also the ASUS A7A266-E with ali chipset is an option. 2 and 2...but about 120 bucks...

With such high DDR prices a lot of people are in the same boat as you...

I just noticed how new it was. Glad I am not slipping by not knowing about them introducing it. 🙂 If there is more places that pick up the Mobo, i definately would go after the AK32L. Would be a wonderful overclocker. I wanna stay away from ALI chipsets....haven't heard too many raves about them. I wanna find something for the long haul, at least a year or so that will allow me to tweak a bit, but still be rock stable.

I don't like ordering new mobs but the AK32(KT-266) has been out a while and the 32L is a KT266a so i'll probably just order one...
Hopefully any revisions will just be bios...

$69 is a pretty good deal.

Through in a $50 video card and it looks pretty good....

Actually there's more choice. For SDRAM+Athlon combination, you can have KT133A, SiS 735, ALi Magik1, VIA KT266A.
Since KT133A is weaker than the newer chipsets in other aspects, I'd take one of the latter.

ECS has K7S5A, K7AMA and K7VTA2 boards, all of which support SDRAM and DDR (not at the same time though!), and are
available with LAN option. At least K7S5A has 4-channel sound now, maybe the others do too.
ECS even have AMR and CNR modems to fill that otherwise completely redundant slot.

They're all cheap and stable, with average performance levels (when compared to boards using the same chipsets that cost
twice as much). Why are they cheap? No toys, no RAID, no overclocking.

i would recommend an epox 8kta3+ with the kt133a chipset.great overclocker and prolly dirt cheap by now.just built one for dear old mom, like she really needs a 1200 t-bird@1400 and onboard raid to check email & word process 😉

has anyone got any experience with AK32L? Or have got any feedback from its users?
I am also looking for a SD+DDR solution, would most probably go with an ECS Board

i definately would go after the AK32L. Would be a wonderful overclocker
LordThing, have you seen any one overclocking this board or any review?? I couldn't find result with "Shuttle+ak32L" on any search engine

The only AK32L reference the Copernic 2001 search program turned up was the Shuttle web site. According to their web site, the board is brand new - that's why no references available elsewhere on the web, and only one vendor listed on Pricewatch. I am currently looking at the AK32L or the ECS K7S5A with an Athlon XP 1700+ to replace my Shuttle AI61 Slot A motherboard with 800 mhz Slot A Thunderbird. I have 512 mb of CAS2 PC133 Infineon RAM that I don't want to replace at this time. Both the Shuttle and ECS motherboards look like good solutions.

Only reason I assume it would be a good overclocker is because of the KT266a chipset and I figured it was based partially on the AK31, which alot of people rave about.

<< Consider Sis. GREAT chipset. >>

I'm second to this, only KT266A can beat SiS735 Performance. KT133, KT133A, and KT266 are just history now. Compare SiS735 with KT266A or Nvidia, then it's gonna be fair comparation.
