My friend doesnt want his "old" computer any longer so I'm thinking of swapping my system out for his.

His is a ...

P4-2.8 w/ 533FSB w/ 512MB of RAM, but I can add an additional 512MB

or

Mine ...

AMD Sempron 64 2300 w/ 1GB of ram

It seems when I'm burning a DVD and browsing the internet, it tends to slow down.
My friend said maybe the P4 would be faster.

The P4 is faster than yours, but your RAM should help you in some applications.

DVD burning is not one of them.

I figure it wouldnt help with burning, but I thought if it's much faster than my system, I'll swap it out. It's not worth reinstalling all my apps though if it's not much of a difference.

Do you mean that your Sempy is running at 2.3Ghz or what? If it is running at 2.3Ghz (must be OC'ed some) swiching to that Intel system would likely be a downgrade

I'm not sure what the exact speed is, but when I purchased it, it was advertised as a Sempron 64 2300. AMD's labeling confuses the hell out of me. i DID NOT overclock.

I dont like Intel but imo that P4 would be faster.

The P4 2.8B performs like an XP 3000+

The intel would be faster. The ram will help with the burning. If anyone says different they are full of sh!t.

Sempron 2300 = 1.53GHz in case anyone was looking it up

The Intel will be faster. Northwoods are very cool too. Using a CoolerMaster temperature probe my 2.26 GHz Northwood OCd to 2.8 GHz (1.55V) idles @ 28-30 and loads @ 40-42 all with a Thermalright XP-90 (very quiet). I think you'll be happy with the P4 and if you're up to a little OCing i'm sure you'll easily get to 3.0+ GHz.

The only way that would be better is if the P4 had HT which is doesnt. the P4c's had HT. But you could probably get the motherboard and buy a northwood and pop it in I guess. Or keep you MB and but an A64 in it.

not much of a difference, but if you can overclock the sempron then it would probably end up better by a significant margin.

How is he going to put an A64 in his motherboard?

I swear you guys must be smoking some good stuff while posting.
