which cellphone company has the best phone selections?

my 2 year contract with Verizon is up in a few weeks and I'm in desperate need of a new phone (the battery clip on my current phone is broken, so I had to scotch tape the battery to the phone 😱).

I've been happy with the service and support I get with Verizon in the NYC area, but as I'm shopping for a new phone, I kinda feel like their options are lackluster, so I figured I may as well shop around and compare phone selections/price plans.

in a major area like this, I can't imagine any phone company would have *horrible* service.

Verizon does have some good phones now, check the Samsung 950, VG8000 series and Motorola E815.....all nice phones 🙂

the Motorola E815 is my top pick at Verizon right now (I really like the razr v3c a lot too, but want a phone with an mp3 player).

but it's like waiting to have sex before your married... if you only ever sleep with one person, won't you always be wondering in the back of your mind about what else is out there? 😉

Wrong.

Tmobile has the best phones..

GSM phones will always be the best =]. Verizon has the WORST phone deals out of any phone company. Anyone will tell you that. Go to any Asian store. They pay the least commission, so the phone deals are the absolute worst...

If you're happy with your current service, why bother changing? The Motorola E815 absolutely blows the phones that Sprint/Nextel has out of the water. I haven't really researched other companies, tho, since none of them apply to me.

WTF r u talking about.. That phone is so pathetic. It's what.. a V600 for CDMA? I've had a V600 since August 2004, and even then that phone's been out since March 04? BTW I got mine for free....

Please. Get a grip on phone technology.

Look at the K750i/W800i. I'm pointing out a phone that's been out since APRIL 2005. Bluetooth 2.0, none of that DISABLED VERIZON CRAP, 2 megapixel camera good enough to be printed out (blows the N90 out of the water), MP3 playage (k750i has 32mb + 64mb memory, W800i has 32 + 512mb or 1024mb), they can be expanded with SONY MS Pro Duo, not like that BS proprietary Moto crap, probably the best flash on a camera ever that can serve as a flashlight, etc etc..

True technology is worse and range is worse, and this is mainly a problem when you go into the wild no-mans-land. Driving down I-5 to LA or driving on the major interstates you get reception. I still get reception anywhere in the city. I've only had network busy twice in my life (once in my quiet neighborhood in the evening, and the other time at the sold out Cal Stanford game... duhh 70,000 ppl in 1 spot).

But in the end you get a SIM card that makes life easy esp if you travel overseas. Plus if you break a phone like me, you're still in business after a simple phone swap.

Oh get a grip. Opinion is subjective.

Who cares how long it has been out? Not I. The E815 can be very easily hacked to do away with the Verizon cripplings. Why would you want to print out a picture taken from a camera phone? If you want to play MP3s on it... fine. It uses a MiniSD card... not "BS proprietary Moto crap". As for the flash... again, I couldn't care less. If you want quality pictures, use a camera, not a phone.

Its funny how I hear so many people say bad things about Motorola phones.. I've owned many different cell phones from several different providers & Motorola phones consistantly provide the best reception & sound quality, while nationwide Verizon is the best (& universally top rated) cell provider... they charge more then most other companys because they offer better service.. the exception to this would be if you travel outside the USA where a GSM phone will continue to operate.

I'm not saying Verizon ROCKS. The person here wants a new phone. I'm simply pointing that most people at ATOT are just horribly educated about phones. Go check out HowardForums for example and you will know that there are many other better phones out there. Yes, moto is absolutely overrated. The RaZr especially. Why? It's a V600 in a new casing. Gee. I've had my V600 for a long time and yes when it came it out was amazing. SE was still lagging behind without VGA cameras. But that was April 2004. The RaZr came out Sept 04 or Oct 04. I could've gotten one free around November, and finally today we see providers finally lowering prices and RaZrs for free. But the thing its its based on technology over 1 year old. SE finally jumped into VGA cameras by Aug 04, but their S710 in late 04 jumped ahead to 1.3 mpixels, and finally hit 2MP with the K750i in mid 2005.

What I'm saying is that there are dozens of phones out there that kick ass. Maybe some of you don't happen to know about Nokia's N90/N91 or SE's K750i/W800i or the billions of other kickass phones out there but honestly when you stack Motorola against those, I don't see how there's any competition. If you take a look in Asia or Europe where cell phones and providers are always leaps ahead of mainstream America, you will see Moto is definitely not your top choice.

If you want to stay with Verizon because you honestly value service, then that is great. You won't be getting the best phone, but I guarantee you that you will be getting something that works and will be satisfactory.

For someone like me who's willing to sacrifice a little service for a better phone, I'll go with T-Mobile. Sure I haven't even had problems with reception. Sure reception was a little bad for me int he dorms last year, but its bad for most people. I got 1 -2 bars, but Verizon for around 3 bars. I survived, but I'll say I was happier with a better phone.

And for people who say "omg get a real camera, get a real mp3 player," I agree with you that a phone can't replace them all. But think of it this way. When I can go to class with just my phone and a set of headphones and get as good audio quality as an iPod or just ditch my ginormous Canon Powershot G3 and stick with only my camera phone, then that's pretty satisfying. The fact that I don't need to bring 5 separate devices makes my life EASIER. Sure I won't go on photo shoots without my G3 and a tripod, but for daily point and shoot my K750i is satisfactory. If I'm not going on a 10 hr trip and I only need a few songs to go to class with my K750i provides me with the entertainment I need + radio if I want.

Tmobile can use any GSM phone in the entire world..
its the only US carrier to support all 3 bands in the TRIBAND system.

Cingular is a close second..
dont limit yourself with crappy non GSM phones...
Verizion and Sprint/Nextel suck and need to modernize thier networks and go GSM

I tend to agree in general. I keep going back to Motorola phones for those same reasons, but some Motorola phones are real steamers--the V276 was a bad purchase for me (at least I got it with no contract, so I still have my New Every 2). Sound quality seemed average at best (reception was a step up from the LG VX6100 though), and the case was built cheap, not made to last.
