Which CDRW to get? Yamaha 8x8x24 OR Creative Labs 8x4x32 ??? Need advice!

I have narrowed it down to the Creative Labs 8x4x32 and the Yamaha 8x8x24...

I want to get the CL, since is just a remarked Plextor 8X4X32, BUT it only has a 2mb buffer.

However, the Yamaha has a 4mb buffer, and a faster rewrite speed, but then again, its not a Plextor.

Does "being" a Plextor drive warrant getting the drive over something else, even though the other drive has the better features?

These drives are in the same price range, so thats why I was looking at them

Thanks!

I don't think so (RE: plextor) unless it's SCSI or has the BurnProof. However let me recommend the 8x4x24 Yamaha, it's got a 4MB buffer...and to be honest you won't do much rewriting at all. At least I haven't, and no one that I know does. Click the link in my sig, I wrote a review on the Yamaha 8x4x24 that I have, you might want to read it.

But of the two you mentioned, I'd say go for the Yamaha.

Thanks konichiwa!

The drive i was looking to get is the 8X8X24 Yamaha....

What are your system specs? How many coasters do you make on average?

I thought of getting a Plextor drive, just because EVERYONE was talking about it 🙂

Yeah but if I was you I wouldn't buy a Plex drive unless it's one of the ones with BurnProof. I think you're just wasting extra money.

Yeah I know you were talking about the 8x8x24, I was talking about the 8x4x24. 😉 I recommended that because most people do hardly any ReWriting so the extra $$ on a faster rewrite speed is almost worthless. That's why I recommended spending less and getting the 8x4x24. But if you really want the extra 4x in RW then I'd say get the Yamaha.

As for me, my system specs are 500MHz P3, 128MB Ram...I haven't made a coaster yet. Burned about 25 CDs. Of course I haven't tried computing PI yet, but...

I have had Yamaha drives, they are okay. But still nowhere near as consistent as my Plextor. You can pick an 8/4/32 up for about $190 or less. Thats with software. I would really recommend the 12/10/32, and you will never ever get buffer under runs with it.

This is why I am choosing between the two drives: At onvia.ca they have the Yamaha for $222.54 CAD and the Creative for $ 238.44 CAD. Then there is the $50 coupon, which brings the price of both drives to roughly $120 USD.

konichiwa: The drive you mentioned, is it SCSI? The drive I am talking about is EIDE, but onvia.ca has your drive for about $10 more, but I dont have a SCSI card.

I am REALLY tight on money, so the best cd-recorder for the cheapest price is what I am looking for....

Thanks

If you are going to get a Yamaha or a Creative the choice is simple go with the Yamaha. If you can get the Plextor burnppoof do it. I can get the Yamaha 8x8x24 SCSI and a tekram card for a little more than the Plextor IDE so I went SCSI.

I think the rewrite feature is pretty useful. I use it all the time to make backups. I would go for the Yamaha.
