I'm still using my HP 8100 4x cd burner and it works fine for me, so I haven't looked into them for a while. I'm buying my dad one for christmas and already picked up the yamaha crw2200ez 20x10x40 for $99 after rebate at Best Buy. I'm wondering if there is a better one out there for the same amount or less money. I always hear people talk about Plextor, but can't decide.

The best burner right now is Lite-On. At ~$95, you get 24/10/40 with burn-proof and it can burn all cd copy protections (including SD-2), unlike the 12/10/32A Plextor.

What are you expecting to burn? if you are CloneCding then maybe something else(Acer are good drives, I can do SD2 with mine, I guess the new Lite-ons can too now)...but if you are just burning MP3s and backing up stuff who the hell cares! Just get a descent speed(12X and above) and burn-proof/just-link/etc if you are going to look for anything in a drive besides that it would be how much CPU utilization while burning...

$125 for the Lite-On 24x??? what are you talking about? newegg sells the retail version of the 24x for $102 shipped! that is an awesome deal for an awesome burner. the plextors are also very nice, but the price is a bit steep considering the lite-on is very close if not right on performacne wise. lite-on and plextor both have 32x burners coming out soon, so you may want to check them out.
