I'd go with the Sony as I have had bad experiences with Asus CDROMs as they tend to break down after a year or so.

How about a Kenwood 72x TrueX. I have it best CD-ROM I have ever owned. Its fast and very quiet.

I guess I'll go with the sony OEM one. its only $5 (CDN) more. Its not like a retail vs. oem matters much with cdroms.

I think either way you'll be ok. Take a look at the Toshiba 48x. I really, really like that CD-ROM. If it's in the budget-ballpark, I'd go for the Toshiba.

Which one did you buy, cardart? If it was a 42x or 52x, then I don't blame you.

However, the 72x's are very nice drives. But as stated, the 72x is out of budget in this discussion. So, the point is moot! ;)

Yeah I agree with Wingznut, I've bought 2 of the 72x drives and they have performed better than about any drive out there for both speed and quietness.

Toshiba 48x is a great drive for the price. Another vote there!

Nobody mentioned TEAC and Acer, so I will. They make some of the best CD-ROMs in the business. Especially the TEAC 40x, very fast DAE, high readability. The Acer is cheap and high performing, also known for its readability. Those two ranks up there with Toshiba, I would forget Sony and Asus.
